UK town is printing its own local money

The town of Lewes has been printing a local currency called the Lewes Pound. The Lewes Pound is accepted at stores and merchants in Lewes, and some merchants are even offering deals for people who pay with Lewes Pounds.

The folks behind the Lewes Pound say local currency serves to keep local economies strong, reduces carbon footprint by encouraging people to do their business locally, and strengthens social bonds within communities.

Sounds great to me. Let's get some Frisco Bucks a' printin'! (yeah, I know, no one who lives in SF should ever call it Frisco, but Frisco Bucks just has a nice ring to it)

    • I sort of don't see the point though. Is it supposed to discourage people from ever leaving Lewes because their money wouldn't be worth anything elsewhere?

    • Might it not be a little alienating to outsiders though? It bad enough getting suspicious looks and refusals of service when I go back to London just because I have Scottish money (though the new notes do look like toy money).

I wonder if the Lewes Pound is actually recognised as legal tender and how securely printed it is.

    • A Lewes local clipped a story about plans for this a few months ago. Now it's in action, cool! It's the same value as Sterling, but keeping the money local. Interesting idea. I wonder if it'll catch on elsewhere?
