Study: traditional men earn most

Those who endorse distinct societal gender roles earn more than others

Men with egalitarian attitudes about the role of women in society earn significantly less on average than men who hold more traditional views about women's place in the world, according to a study being reported today.

It is the first time social scientists have produced evidence that large numbers of men might be victims of gender-related income disparities. The study raises the provocative possibility that a substantial part of the widely discussed gap in income between men and women who do the same work is really a gap between men with a traditional outlook and everyone else.

The differences found in the study were substantial. Men with traditional attitudes about gender roles earned $11,930 more a year than men with egalitarian views and $14,404 more than women with traditional attitudes. The comparisons were based on men and women working in the same kinds of jobs with the same levels of education and putting in the same number of hours per week.

    • this is one of those things where you wish you could see the actual demographics or some specifics of the study. one can make the argument that it's suggested or at the very least, that one is certainly tempted to assume or take for granted that "all things are equal," (even insomuch as they've purposefully, deliberately tried to make it seem that way saying they all come from the same line of work putting in the same hours etc) but, in my experience, in real life, in actual practice, they almost NEVER really are.

I've seen men doing double to triple the actual work a woman does in the same field, even in the same offices, and I've heard about the commendations and raises going to a woman who simply assumes unbecoming credit simply because she's capitalizing on egalitarian "sympathizers" that she "has a family" or "kids to support." I guess it's too much for some to realize that men certainly do too, and in the case I cite, that was the exactly circumstance. This guy literally had to get his ducks in a row just to show his "egalitarian" superiors that comparative case load and work far surpassed this woman's in quality and quantity. His superiors were forced to recognize him for the work that was actually done in the place of business and give the guy his freakn due, and his raise.

moral of the story? I don't believe all women can, or care to capitalize on empathizers, but they may find blind sympathizers on some egocentric morality trip much much more to easy manipulate so, watch your backs boys...and you particularly honest and laudable ladies too (gotta love ya!) ;)

    • maybe "egalitarian" men make less because women find them much easier to fuq over =P ...and we all know how women much prefer a challenge to say, "security" =P

reminds me of that movie I just watched with Denzel Washington "Out of Time" where his high school "sweetheart" fires a round into him for the money, saying "it wasn't all bs [their affair] but life ain't shit when you're broke!" =D lol

    • So, every other week, I find a new "shocking" study that reaffirms the fact that women staying in the kitchen is the best way to go. The 50's are gone, let's not dwell on the past.

How can a woman who works the same kind of job as a man and puts in the same number of hours per week be considered to have a "traditional attitude" in the sense that the article describes it?

    • Victims of gender-related income disparities? Why portray these egalitarian men as victims rather than fair-minded people who seem to be more willing to spread the pool of earnings more evenly?

    • They might earn more but I would love to see the percentage increase in claims against them.

Surely this just means that men with this viewpoint are poor value for money in the long run.

    • A Fable: Hercules and Plutus

When Hercules was received among the gods and was entertained at a banquet by Jupiter, he responded courteously to the greetings of all with the exception of Plutus, the god of wealth.

When Plutus approached him, he cast his eyes upon the ground, and turned away and pretended not to see him.

Jupiter was surprised at this conduct on his part, and asked why, after having been so cordial with all the other gods, he had behaved like that to Plutus.

"Sire," said Hercules, "I do not like Plutus, and I will tell you why. When we were on earth together I always noticed that he was to be found in the company of scoundrels.

    • jahbini:

You mean Aesop himself contended that there was a herd of neo-con swindler\sycophants begging favors from the Olympian neo-gods in ancient times, too?

This is not possible. It cannot be. Surely FOX Noise and The History [TM] Channel would have made us aware of this tragic, if very logical and timely fable?

Though I don't recall them giving any headlines to Jesus chasing the money changers out of the temple, either... It is a special kindness not to burden others with things they should not know. The cable companies seem to understand this.

      Many thanks.
