Sometimes it takes an outside perspective to piece it all together. I’m reading today’s LA Times story about Vanguard and even though I sat down for an interview with Matea Gold to talk about what it was like to work here while our friends Laura and Euna were being detained in North Korea, it didn’t really come together until just now.
We’ve all been swept up in preparation for the season that premieres tonight, and for the months during Laura and Euna’s absence, keeping busy was one way we all dealt with the grief and anxiety.
Darren and I were in Sri Lanka in March, reporting on the end of the war there when we got the call. It was four in morning. It was surreal, but we thought it would be only a matter of days before they were released and we completed our assignment.
In May, we were driving through Kentucky to interview the Lt. Governor Daniel Mongiardo with Cerissa Tanner, our co-producer on “The OxyContin Express”, when word came that Laura and Euna were going to be sentenced. We pulled over to the side of the highway and even though none of us are particularly religious, we prayed. The whole making of this season was filled with moments like this. But to know how much Laura had put into building Vanguard, we felt there was nothing better we could do than to keep it going.
For me, tonight’s premiere is an emotional one, not just because of the powerful subject, but because I remember the cloud under which it was produced. Of course, most of that cloud was lifted on Aug. 4th when the team gathered around the TV to watch Laura and Euna boarding a plane in North Korea.
The rest will lift as we dedicate this season to them.

So how why is it that vanguard didn't even recognize the whole oil leek thing that's been going on? I mean it's great that they want to cover things like the inevitable flow of drugs into the US, but there are more important things going on...

Wow! This was very interesting and insightful! I love how it was captured, through the eyes of the people who were addicted too such an easy drug-addiction and yet the same people who were ashamed and lost loved ones because of what they were doing while talking about their close loved ones while doing the easy drug-addictions that cost them their loved ones.
It really showed how people were so selfish and just want to give up on everything.
It really shows how pathetic people are, willing to travel to a different state to spend about $700.00 on prescription drugs that are killing them and they're families.
This really needs to stop. They're the ones responsible for law changes, and more punishment on the rest of the Country. I think something drastic needs to happen that can't happen by little laws and regulations but by the people, the people that don't deserve to be responsible for our tax dollars to build you more jail cells, the younger generation to be apart of the aftershock to either clean up or fuse the pandemic of selfishness, our decisions to create and build rehab facilities (that don't work), when we can be using our time and creativity to produce art, music and technology.
Nothing seems or has to be fair anymore. We're giving in to easy, these are people who need attention so bad they have to kill themselves to get it, and we're giving them everything we got.
This needs to stop.-kayla moon

marianna, i have never been so blown away by anything before in my sad little life, ill be real with you, i cried at the end when todd's mom said he'd never recover with a straight face, thats about as real as anything can get, i live in broward county and i was oblivious to the gritty reality around me, you have opened up my eyes. i went on to rave about vanguard and the oxycontin express episode on facebook (lame i know) and its effect on me and hopefully on the masses. this is the type of show that deserves the attention of everyone and i cant tell you enough how damn relevant and important your episode and the show "vanguard" is to the future of the world, just look at the reaction firsthand youre getting just by pointing a camera straight into this ugly sore no one else will cover, from threats to being followed youre putting yourself into the front lines and at harms length, i admire the hell out of you and everyone else involved and i honestly believe you guys are singlehandedly progressing the concept of journalism. please, please stay safe and keep doing what youre doing, you have inspired me and i know in turn thousands others who will be captivated by the simplicity with which you capture the gritty reality we are so denied by the "news you can trust". thank you from the bottom of my heart. i look forward to seeing more of this from this network i am loving more and more everyday. and please DONT SELL OUT!! YOU HOLD THE TORCH TO A BRIGHTER FUTURE!!

I linked it to facebook too ;)
I don't think that's lame, I'm just using my outlet to turn more people on to current! Yeah it was a tear jerker! Even though I've lived through it (well still living through it,) after watching that episode, I was speechless for a 1/2 hour.
But it was on Hula a week ago? Damn. I wish I would have known that.

UNBELIEVABLE, sadly it is actually very believable, considering the greed of the whole system. What is very interesting is the company that manufactures Oxycontin and similar drugs also has the market sewn up in the manufacture of laxatives. So this company gives you the shaft from both ends.

WOW! That was an eye opening episode! After having 3 friends die as a result of overdosing on OxyContin, I thought I knew about the pain medication problem. But you have told the whole story. Thank You!
I know a pain management doctor who would be more than willing to talk on camera about the epidemic. I'd be honored to add some input to your eye opening story!
