Regardless of recall, Walker may face indictment

By David Shuster / current.com / Take Action News

According to government lawyers familiar with a Milwaukee criminal corruption probe, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker is now a "target" of the investigation.

The legal sources, who are not involved in Wisconsin's recall, spoke on condition of anonymity. They said Walker faces "serious legal challenges," including "a possible indictment," regardless of the election results on Tuesday.

The sources indicate Walker's status was clarified more than a week ago, allegedly following a series of requests by Walker's legal team that prosecutors publicly clear him of any wrong doing before the recall election. Take Action News reached out to Governor Walker's spokesperson for comment on this story and received no response.

The investigation began in 2010 when Walker served as Milwaukee County executive. Six people have been charged, with accusations ranging from campaigning for Walker on government time to embezzlement. 13 other Walker associates have been given immunity from prosecution in exchange for their testimony in the case.

This week, Governor Walker acknowledged he has now transferred $160,000 from his campaign accounts to a legal defense fund. Mr. Walker confirmed the money is strictly for his own defense and not for any current or former staff.

Lawyers for Governor Walker recently appeared at the Milwaukee courthouse but refused to say why they were there. The lawyers have also refused to comment on the Governor's status in the investigation.

On Tuesday, Wisconsin voters will go to the polls in the state's recall election. Fifteen months ago, Walker set off huge protests at the Capitol when he took aim at unions representing state government workers and passed a law ending many of their rights to collective bargaining.

    • You said it, teice, Amen! Won't be long before Walker finally faces the criminal charges that should have been brought BEFORE the election. The question now is, what kind of governor will the lLt. governor make?

Yup! Want to see what right to work is like, long term? Just take a good look at Texas. It's in the gutter on so many levels. Big bulk of jobs are minimum wages, no benefits; millions and millions in the state with no medical insurance. 4th highest poverty rate; 2nd highest food insecurity; 47th in median net household worth; 1st in uninsured and elderly uninsured; 4th in population of low income covered by medicaid; 48th in employee based insurance (yay! right to work, here we come!).

Know how those republicans in WI hate regulations? Yeah, Rick Perry hates 'em too. We're 1st...yes, highest, in CO2 and VOC emissions, 1st in toxic chemicals in the water, and 1st in cancer-causing carcinogens released into the air and hazardous waste generated.

So, all the Koch-buttkissers, just give it a year or two, this is what you have to look forward to. Some people just have to learn the hard way.

    • Congratulations to the citizens of Wisconsin for rejecting this obvious attempt by the left to hijack the governors office and electing gov walker for the second time. The first time a recall has been defeated. Next up BHO.

    • I do not believe Walker won fairly! There needs to be an investigation! How did the recall people get twice as many signatures from people, than needed for the recall, only to lose the election? Why did the Wash Post call the election based solely on exit polls? Walker is DIRTY, PURE AND SIMPLE, HE NEEDS TO GO DOWN, AND LIVE IN THE BIG HOUSE! NOT ONE REPUBLICAN SHOULD EVER BE ELECTED! THEY HATE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE!

    • daeros, I agree, because then it might be a huge blow to the GOP, because Rick Scott would be next on the list, I mean face it, they just want something that the GOP feels only supports them and supports Europe and their ways of style and life.

    • It's hard to decide which would do more damage, him getting reelected and being indicted or losing and getting indicted. in either event PLEASE make sure you charge him before November.

    • Well the thing is, I feel that him trying to encourage "Voter Fraud" as Republicans are trying to "Cheat" the voting system, it is already proving to be a reason why it is starting to get this bad, and why it is affecting the international community in the process of it.
