Timeline of mass shootings since Columbine

By Carrie Mihalcik / current.com / @CDMihalcik

It has been more than a dozen years since the killings at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., which should have been a wakeup call for America's obsession with guns. Instead, more gun violence has unfolded.

With last week's tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School as the backdrop, Current revisits Michael Moore's Academy Award–winning documentary, "Bowling for Columbine."

Michael Moore discusses the source
of America's love affair with guns:

How bad has gun violence gotten in America? Here is a timeline of mass shootings in the 12 years since Columbine:

    • TO SEDWIN: Wow, if you aren't a self-righteous poo. My husband posted the first comment, and I saw your "responses". I have not watched the news on a regular basis in years, because I believe that--like politicians--they are only telling us what they "want" us to believe is true. We are pawns in their game of who can puff their chest out the biggest. Now, you eluded to the fact that my husband is right wing and reality is "flipped" for him--just who are you and who says your reality isn't flipped??? You brazenly posted your feelings and beliefs on this website, so what makes you better than everyone else, to say that their opinions don't count. It appears to me that you are the extremist that you are claiming everyone else to be that doesn't agree with you. For the other women on here laughing right now, I have 2 teenage daughters who use Facebook---don't you see this Sedwin as a teenager all about the drama and attention? You were very creative with your response, and read so much into the small paragraph and like our politicians and media made it about race, muslims, and mexicans--not sure how you pulled that out of there. You should be proud and possibly run for office. If for any moment in your life you thought your opinion was the only one that mattered or was the only right one, maybe you should see if you can pass the "psych test". Now, carefully read this and take your time in responding, I have not stated anywhere in this what my beliefs about guns are, I have not made any insinuations about my feelngs of race, religion, or where you come from. I am simply here to state that you "come off" as ridiculous as your statement "the false claim that one should own a gun and be prepared to use it especially against unarmed children as a good christian is absolutely ridiculous" was obviously pulled from your perverted mind that believes only you matter--because it did not come from my husband's post.

    • I have always liked Michael Moore's movies but I can't support him on this one. Gun Control does nothing but protect the the bad guys who do not care about laws anyway!!! The best gun control is gun training for those that buy guns and mental health programs for the unstable. Nobody wants to give up their gun rights for a law that will solve nothing!!!

I am not sure what you are taking about but most of the bad guys do not buy guns through legal channels. They either steal them or buy them from other bad guys. That is why gun control only hurts the the good guys because the bad guys could care less about gun laws. People who compromise on their rights will lose them in the long run. That is why I refuse to support a gun control law that solves nothing. I plan to fight hard to keep my rights to own a gun to protect my family.

    • I really think we God fearing Americans with a backbone should not be watching current tv. Who cares what this Michael Moore thinks.I enjoy my firearms and sleep good at night knowing that if someone breaks into my house they probably wont be repeat offenders.Like most celebrities,if you can call him that,he probably has armed body guards. What would the weaker people in this easily offended country do without someone to protect them from the increasingly doped up youth.Get a grip, quit whining, and dont be surprised when one of your neighbors pulls out his weapon and saves your life.

Wow, you’re the man. I don’t know a single celebrity, but I did see Waylon Jennings in concert one time. I’m confused about how you came up with the fact that I am a right wing republican who hates other races and can’t pass a psych test. You could probably be a celebrity yourself, maybe on the psychic network. I know it’s hard to believe, but I actually was in law enforcement and now I even work for the government. I’m a big boy now. :) I didn’t mean to come off as rude, arrogant, a bully, or God forbid—a racist republican. I just wanted to voice my opinion without making people angry, especially you and your mom. Apologize for me please. I really think when you move out of your mom’s basement, get a real job around real people, stop watching Current TV, and just plain old grow up, your life will improve---you might even sprout a penis and you won’t be so dag gone angry all the time. Hell, maybe even one of your many MANY celebrity buddies will get you a job. Maybe Michael Moore himself.

    • The only thing that I took away from Michael Moore's video was that he makes tons of money from junk. If he likes Canada why does he stay in his multi million dollar house in the United States ? Why not move to Canada ? He hates America but LOVES the money he makes from it. And Current..knock off the anti gun propaganda. I retired after 22 years in law enforcement as a police chief and now live in Littleton, Co. About a half a mile from Columbine. So quit playing on peoples emotions during this time and do some ACCURATE reporting. How would Current feel about eliminating our first amendment rights ? And have the government approve any articles before they are aired.

"Ha Ha Ha! First of all Michael Moore has said over and over he loves this country."

      Yeah that makes it so!

      "...we are a democracy)"

No we are not. We are a republic. We have the rule of law not the tyranny of the majority. Only in a republic are civil rights in place for all not just the majority.

Your arrogance and condescending attitude as well as your willingness to place some right more equal than others is beyond Orwellian all the way to disturbing fascism. It is a fact that gun crime has been on the downswing in the past years. IT is a fact that the urban areas with the strictest gun control laws have pretty much the greatest crime. It is a fact that the Sandy Hook shootings occurred in a state given a #5 rating, with #1 being the best, by the Brady Bunch. IT is a fact that the last Assault Weapons ban had virtually no effect on crime either during or after it expired. It is a fact that in the UK and Australia, after removing the rights of the people to defend themselves, violent crime escalated. It is a fact that an "assault rifle" was not used in Sandy Hook and lastly, it is a fact that magazine capacity is not a tactical limiter to those wishing to do terrible things such as the shooting in CT.

accuratereporting is correct. You, not he, are wrong.

    • Yes. Columbine took place during the assault weapons ban. Notice, however, the spike in assault weapons related killing and mass shootings after the end of the ban. This timeline illustrates brilliantly how we used to go a couple of years between these events and now they happen almost monthly.

Yet no one ever brings up those topics. Bans have been tried and didn't work. Did making weed illegal stop people from smoking it? How about the rest of illegal drugs? Sure make all guns illegal. Then the cartels will have another industry to make millions off of. All it takes is a small machine shop to make guns.It takes more resources and room to make and grow drugs than it takes to make guns.

You talk about facts..you need to take time and obtain the accurate facts. Check the FBI stats. Gun crimes have been going down every year for twenty years. This is not me this is the FBI. More children die from swimming pools and bee stings than from guns. These are the facts.
