Tired of Current's Initial Story Placement?

Please don't initially place this story at #278 on page 14.
Current has a lot of good things going for it, but here is some feedback that I think should be considered.
Please create a "newest story" list on the homepage. Allow users to access the freshest stories coming into the site as they are contributed.
I'm so tired of submitting stuff that never starts within the first 15 pages. And yes I've looked. and yes these stories never have more than 2 views, both mine, after 5 days.
To be honest, after the homepage, who has time to search through the next 20 pages of content that is so jumbled?
Also, it would be nice to see the current ranking of the story on the actual story page, so you don't have to search through 15 pages to see where it started.
What do others think? If you would like to have an "up to the minute recently added stories list" on the homepage vote this up. If not, well, do what you always do...suppress me with mob rule!

I would prefer not to have to sent emails to people just to get their vote. Again, the problem is news solely by popularity. Just because a news item is popular doesn't mean it's news or vice versa. Alot of interesting items fall thru the cracks.

Thanks very much for that response. It still baffles me how an entry could be (as an example) number 24 one minute and then wind up in last place the very next one. Sending to connections may help, but only if your connections are here every day and reading their mail. I really wish this site had an activist page where people who wished to could post about petitions and other actions to network with people here. I sent my last video letter to many connections and have many tags and all good responses and still it is on the next to the last page after getting up to the first four pages then suddenly moving back. I hope that is something Current.com is working on as well.

Hey guys,
First of all, let me say thanks so much for all of your feedback. We are actually working on some new features that will address some of the concerns you've brought up (Look for some of those being announced very soon on the Current blog!) and I wanted to address a few things that have been brought up.
First of all, as cheezynuts pointed out, we do indeed have a new page where you can view the most recently added Current.com stories. You can click on the "new" tab--it's right next to "popular"--or you can just go directly there: http://current.com/news/newest/0.htm
In terms of promoting your stories, several people have mentioned that adding topics and connecting to people as a way to get more interest. Both of these are great ideas, since adding relevant topics helps your story appear in more topic pages. Connecting to people is also a way to get more people to find your story. You can also promote your story on Twitter or other sites; there are quite a few Current members who have had good results using Twitter to help get the word out about their stories.
If the emails are overwhelming, you can select which emails you'd like to receive (or none at all) by going to your account page: http://current.com/account/editPreferences.htm
Thanks again for all the great feedback. It really is helpful for us to hear.
Best,
Steph

The more that people "connect to you," the more people will will see your posts appearing in their "from my connections" in "my current," which will give them an opportunity to vote your stuff up. So, in addition to e-mailing people what you think they would like, those that are "connected" to you will also see all your posts.

Same here. I submit things and they never get seen. Its quite discouraging actually and makes one wonder wtf is the point?
I put one up just today about extending the hand of peace to Bin Laden.. No one will see it and I am REALLY curious what people think about it.

Well, I agree with you on this. I'm tired of seeing posts getting the non news tag and then getting bumped all the way to the back without communicating why. And I also agree with your listing of rank on the page. But it doesn't look as if this will get a response from staff as it is right above the one I posted here yesterday that went bye bye as well without explanation.

If Current TV really wants to be the "other" news source opposed to the general media bringing the unheard and overlooked news to people's attention, the current system is failing in this attempt.

So WTF? This story has gone bye bye. It had jumped all the way to #24 and then within ten minutes gone! I can't find it anywhere. What happened?
This is why so many people get frustrated and discouraged with this website.
Is there just too much shit being uploaded? Is that what it is? It looks and feels that way. There seems to be no real rhyme or reason for anything. It's just one big shitload of uploads with no real uniformity. Posts seem to appear out of nowhere in the top five, stuff that was uploaded within minutes, other posts you can't even find in the first 15 pages.

on a tangent, you noticed they removed the gauge to show you the precentage of positive and negative votes? I was going to make a complaint right before they removed it because I noticed a number of decent pods had a disproportionate number of negative votes despite a large number of positive comments.
With the number of trolls running around they really should bring back the system where you can see who all votes positive and negative on a story or pod. It would keep some of the trolls and haters at bay.

I would guess the pods are getting the same amount of up and down votes, but they're just hidden. I think the trolls are just "under the bridge" now, vs "running around."
I do miss seeing all the Greenlights accumulating that everyone gave for the pods, but I'm not sure I would want to see them on the Current News submissions.

SamuraiDave:
Hey guys,
I wanted to address a couple of things about voting, percentages and trolls that have come up in this thread.
//voting percentages//
One of the reasons the percentages were removed was because it could be misleading; the number of greenlights and redlights is one of the factors we use when determining popularity, but it isn’t the only one. The way the percentages were displayed didn’t give context, which caused some confusion as to why certain stories were more popular than others. For example, a story where only 2 people voted would have a percentage of 50% yes and 50% no, vs. a story that had a percentage of 25% yes and 50%, but had been voted on by 100 people.
//Sock Puppet Voting//
We do have systems in place to help with the detection of inappropriate voting activity (for example, sockpuppeting behavior) and we do address those issues and correct them behind the scenes. If someone continually votes red on one individual's content, it is taken into account, as are several other voting patterns.
//It's OK to Post Red Votes//
Simply voting negatively on a story without commenting does NOT constitute troll-like behavior. Trolling is done to gain attention and cause conflicts to arise, so it’s pretty unlikely that someone who is trolling would vote without commenting, when they could stir up a lot more trouble by leaving an inflammatory comment.
Forcing comments on votes, or listing who voted negatively on stories has the potential to result in a lot more drama and retaliatory voting/commenting, which is why we do not have any plans to force comments or list negative votes.
Ideally, people should be voting on the merits of the item itself, not casting a vote because they are responding to way that the original poster voted on their item. Is that going to happen 100% of the time? Of course not. But we want to encourage that type of voting and discussion as much as possible, and the majority of people who do vote on the merits of a story will tend to balance out the few who don’t.
Best,
Steph

I usually don't feel any pressure to tell someone if I'm giving their "news" submission the redlight, or feel any guilt.
I do however think that it is common courtesy to tell someone why you're redlighting their pod. Although I don't do this every time, I make an effort to tell the person why I'm giving them the redlight and what I think they could do to make their work better.
"If someone continually votes red on one individual's content, it is taken into account, as are several other voting patterns." This sounds like it could be both good and bad. There are some users that usually always get the redlight from me because they continually submit stuff like "so-and-so's camel toe" or "Katy Perry nude photo?". Does this mean that by always giving them the redlight I could be helping them?

Giving people redlights on their pods is different than news items as they put much more work into the former. I don't think it fair to producers that people have a right to redlight their work without commentary while the producer doesn't have the right to know why or be able to challenge such a vote. It's very discouraging for producers
You mention the percentage scale being askewed but what I saw at the end of Nov was more than just askewed, it was way off with pods 70-80% in the red despite all the comments being positive. I had not seen some a lopsided percentage before that time.

To be honest, I would like to see a split homepage. The top 20 most popular side and a top 20 newest uploads side. Back in the day, that's how it used to be, and it was much much better. That would be EXTREMELY fair.
And I would still like a ranking number on the story page itself.

interesting conversation
first, having tried both bombarding my connections with notices and not bombarding my connections; I have come to the conclusion it does not make a difference.
The topic is of great importance in determining the success of the post. Certain hot button topics: religion, sex and politics; e.g. atheism, gay rights, marijuana, porn; all seem to attract large audiences.
Be sure to identify topics and look to see if your post fits the big topics because these reach more people.
Also, presentation of the post. You need a cool pic or graphic (kitty w/ the gun is awesome dabne); also you often need to rewrite the headline and edit the article to focus your point. Finally, you should invite the reader to comment with a question.

When viewers have a chance to see the submitted stories as they come in, the news feels exciting and fresh, and I feel users will gravitate to stories that don't normally get a lot of exposure. Why? Because they will stick out? And those are the stories that should be getting exposure. It also would give the site more credibility as to viewers choice? How can this site be viewers choice when we don't have the chance to see content as it is fed into the machine? I'll be honest, when I log in I want to see what the absolute latest submissions are, not stories that Current insiders feel are neat. Give everyone a shot on the homepage, even if it is just for a few minutes as it will get pushed lower and lower by newer submits.
Right now Current's homepage is full of the same submitters, we all know who they are, because they have the most connections. But in reality what good is that?

I have a problem with news based on popularity. How is Current any better than any other news agency? A number of topics put on TV are the same which are airing on other news networks.
I see alot of interesting articles with very few views which languish due to a lack of popularity.
Basically to get a news story voted up, you either have to post some pandering controversial subject to get the masses riled up with faux outrage and/or spam everyone's email with "So-n-so thinks you'll like this."

yea, sometimes i feel that some of the things that ppl vote up have seen a lot of airtime on other networks already. But whenever you bring something new to the table, you risk people either making you feel like a dumbass for it or pumped cuz it actually made it number 1 (which is super rare)

Pure chance that I saw this. (Only because your comment to yourself showed up at the bottom of the page I was on.)
This is why I stopped waisting my time posting to current.
It has nothing to do with how good the stories are to the average current user.
It has everything to do with how many "friends" you constantly bombard with "hey check out my story".Thus pushing currents hits way up. No thanks, I'll keep my friends.
I use to love this site/channel. Now I hate it.
Infomania is the ONLY reason I even keep the bookmark. The rest is just a headache.

good point about bombardment! I had a friend sign up to vote on one of my pods and about an hour later they contacted me complaining they had 7 emails from Current with the "so-n-so thinks you'll like this." They marked it as spam so they wouldn't get anymore.

One wouldn't have to mark it as SPAM, they could simply deal with it from within the e-mail (if they wanted to).
"To block this community member from sharing items with you, click here."
I guess marking it as SPAM would stop all of the e-mail, whereas using the link from within the e-mail would only stop each individual user.
I recommend a separate G-mail account just for Current.com, that way when you check that e-mail you can expect a ton of the "so and so thinks you'll like this" and it won't clutter up any of your "real" e-mail addresses.

yeah but setting up a seperate email or going thru the process of setting it in your profile is too much of a hassle for friends and families you want to join in to vote. Think about it - some of the people in the pods would like to vote on the pod but they may not want to go thru the hassle of what you just suggested. KISS - Keep It Short & Simple.

Setting up a new e-mail account doesn't seems like a hassle at all to me, but I was thinking of that option more for the Current regulars. I used to use my main e-mail for Current until they came up with the "invite" a friend option and it got overwhelming.
For the "friends and families you want to join in to vote," I don't think this would be necessary, because they probably wouldn't be getting much, if any, "so-n-so thinks you'll like this" type of stuff anyway.

I'm confused.
Why don't you simply click on the "new" link on the homepage? That is where the submissions appear when they are first posted to Current. Isn't that what you're requesting? I spend as much time looking at the new posts as I do the popular "ones." Just click on "popular" or "new" right under "vote now: you make the news" on the homepage and I think you'll get your "newest story" page.
It works the same for the "viewer uploads" page. Under "vote now for the next $1000 recipient for TV," you have the popular/new option.
Also, there is a way to stop the videos from automatically playing, but admittedly, I haven't tried to tackle that yet. I do wish that the default setting was for videos not to play automatically and if you wanted them to play automatically, then you could set it up that way. It's frustrating to me, because every time you load the next response page it plays the video again. If you make lots of errors like me and need to edit your response three times, that means you also have to watch the video three times. Pausing the darn thing does get old and it's still downloading, even when it's not playing so it's still using up my bandwidth. For me, paying per gigabyte, this gets expensive.
To "see the current ranking of the story on the actual story page" would be awesome.
I think you have some good ideas dabne, but I think some of your wishes have already been granted (if I understood them correctly).
