Teenage girl battling to sail solo round the world

On the day Brit 17-year-old Mike Perham became the world's youngest person ever to sail around the globe single-handedly, an even younger whipper-snapper from Holland has announced she wants to steal Mike's crown and try a bit of single-handed circumnavigation herself.

13-year-old Laura Dekker's wish to sail around the world on her own has whipped up a storm of controversy - and a legal battle - in Holland. Concerned that Laura's parents support her marathon voyage, the country's Social Services have asked the courts to grant them custody of her.

Laura's lawyer, however, argues that she won't be alone for longer than three weeks at a time during the whole voyage, saying this should suffice for her to be allowed to attempt the challenge.

Dekker, who's been sailing solo since she was 6, will find out on Friday if she'll be allowed to sea or not.

    • Yes, definitely allow her to go. I don't see why or how it's any of the government's business anyways, considering she and her parents consent.

    • Yea, I agree J_Jammer, if her parents and her sign papers in full acknowledgement of all the probabilities of the trip then she should then do it. She wants to do it, I think it's crazy... but, again, she wants to sail let her sail.

    • They took temp guardianship of her.

She got some advice from the 17 year old.....

.....I think they should allow her to go and have her and her parents sign papers that state they will not sue for damage done to her on her trip. As in no one is going to be held accountable for her death or harm but the parents and herself.

What is the big deal? Kids die every day for more serious matters. If she wants to do this then let her. What is the worst that could happen? She dies. Ok...well if she understands that then why does it matter if she still wants to do it?
