    • Adam actually came up with the idea of what we've now termed a Vanguard "mystery pod." These are random pods that we shoot while we're in-the-field that are totally unplanned. They've sort of become behind-the-scenes windows into the world of Vanguard and our encounters on the road. What's no longer a mystery is Adam's penchant for trying funky foods. Here he goes again!

    • While feasting on our jochi (well, I opted for the fish) we were discussing what exactly this animal looked like. I proposed a game in which Adam, who had never seen a jochi in his life, drew his rendition of one, while our fixer, a native Bolivian, drew a more realisitc version of one. Our fixer's picture came out looking like a cross between a pig and a rat (pretty accurate) while Adam's looked more like the Loch Ness monster.

    • Like a fair number of the scenes that we shoot, and not just the lighter ones, sometimes one thing simply leads to another. In this case, we were having lunch across from a Bolivian military base in the Chapare region, on the fringes of the Amazon forest, and the two choices were fried fish--producer Tracey Chang's choice--or giant rodent, which Adam and I picked. It tasted kind of like hairy pork chops, not so good as the paca, another giant rodent, that Laura Ling and I once ate on camera in a Kamyura village in the Brazilian Amazon... Adam is a very intellectually ambitious journalist, and drawn to complex stories that require a lot of research and thought. But he's also aware that this can make him seem too serious--like the kid you don't want the teacher to call on because his answer will be so in-depth. As a result, it's easy for Vanguard producers like Tracey, or Grace Baek, or Lauren Cerre, or me, to egg him on into doing undignified things on camera. In fact, Adam being subjected to uncomfortable situations is kind of like an entire sub-genre of the Vanguard oeuvre... One more gustatory note: The little restauranst in the Chapare also have amazing rotisserie chicken...
