In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, cities like Ocean Springs, MS are turning to pre-fab cottages reminiscent of turn of the century construction.

    • Not only is the idea of using pre-fabricated housing better than putting people in a trailers, pre-fabricated houses help cut down on construction waste which is one the biggest contributors to landfills. FEMA should really take a look at the benefits of this idea. PROPS to all of the people trying to make this possible.

    • The katrina cottages remind me of the earthquake shacks that were used to house refugees of the 1906 earthquake and fire.

5,610 cottages were constructed to house over 16,000 San Franciscans in 11 refugee camps in locations including Dolores Park, Washington Square, Precita Park, Portsmouth Square, and today's Park-Presidio Boulevard.

There are some of these shacks still in existence around San Francisco thanks to activists who have saved them from demolition.

    • Considered to be the father (one of the fathers) of New Urbanism. When I shot this pod he was doing a lot of work in the area. I also was supposed to interview him, which unfortunately didn't work out. But we would have done the interview in my rental car driving across the state of Louisiana. That would have been AWESOME.
