Grill Business

Gold teeth, fronts, grills, or whatever you call them have been in style among black culture for decades. In Grill Business, Youth Radio's King Anyi contemplates his purchase of a new bottom grill. He meets up with Brandon at the grill shop hoping to check out the quality of workmanship before making up his mind. Take a trip with us to Oakland, his city, to get the facts, styles, and new trends.

    • If money is so tight for you, why are you wasting the little money you have on metal teeth? Why not take a class or two at a community college?

    • Ok, I love TRUE Hip Hop culture as much as any Brooklynite who loves the mind bending lyrics and beats of a Common, Mos Def, Talib Kwali, Roots, Dead Prez, Tupac or even a Kanye or Jay Z. But, my people, and I mean my people, if you want to "Upgrade Ya", like Beyonce says...Then let's upgrade our minds, education, jobs, family lives, financial portfolios, political activism and plain old mind, body and soul. And like my fellow Current TV supporter Hoy said, where do you think those cheap lookin' diamonds came from? They're scrap pieces from a bigger diamond being sold at every other major jewler and children are dying for your "Rose Gold, D'd out, Teeth rotting vampire Grillz"...Not knockin' the style, but I think there are much better things we can spend our $$ on, like getting your teeth fixed after you take those germ ridin' grillz off! (Just Jokin')

I agree completely. It's a tragedy when I look around my neighborhood and see young people wasting their money on such things when they could put that money to better use by taking some business courses or nursing courses or what have you at the community college. My heart hurts for these young men.

    • Every person that feels the need to get grillz should really save the money and invest it in an education, or at least start watching current tv. They're so distracted with living in a music video that they end up celebrating they're own ignorance.

    • Don't really think about Oakland when I think about grills.
I think about Sharpstown Mall off 59 in Houston, where Johnny Dang and Paul Wall have their store, since they're pretty much the reason grills are popular anywhere else.

    • This wasn't so interesting as it was so sad. When oh when will we black people learn that our African brothers slave for those diamonds and young black kids mine for that gold, using mercury. Result, death. My people, wake up, in this time of war and poverty, wake up. We have swallowed the stupid Americaqn lie. Diamonds are forever, ask DeBeer's. one love, Hoy
