Sex to Survive

natecollett
In Kibera, the largest slum in Nairobi, Kenya, young women are turning to prostitution to feed their families. A large proportion of the men having intercourse with the prostitutes refuse to use protection, and as a result, the spread of HIV is running rampant.

    • wow, really powerful pod, can't believe some of those statistics, $1 per day with an average 5-6 kids, 54% in urban areas with aids or HIV is shocking stuff.

    • I am a child ambassador for World Vision and have children in Africa waiting to be sponsored. My own is a young child name Asha from Tanzania. Visit the World Vision website to help these kids.

    • It was wonderful, interesting and moving. I'm 18 and have seen alot of documents like this. The people in Africa is suffering but, with all of these notices not-thing is being done immediately. So I doubt it will change.

    • I found the piece interesting. However, the women of Africa have few opportunites to make enough money to live in the city. Many make better money as a prostitute than something more respectable. Possibly in the future you could show some organizations that are helping these women, maybe show some success stories.

    • hey nathan,
very powerful piece through the voice of the people you interviewed. A bleak and sad issue that unfortunately is reality, but at least you can make their voices heard. thanks for shooting this!
look forward to more of your work.

    • Wow. I sit here in Florida in my 3 bedroom apartment while my two children are asleep. I watch this clip and it moved every fiber of my being. I cannot fathom what it is like to live like that. I love that current is bringing these important issues to our attention. I feel as if the more people who know about these situations, the more people will be outraged... and the more we will be able to do for these people. I sincerely hope that the well being of these people will be recognized and taken care of the way we would take care of our own.
