Virtual Reporting

Despite the growing number of Americans' jobs being done in China and India, you would think that there's just some work that can only be done here in the U.S. Think again.

    • Shame on him!

And I don't know who told him people in India speak English better (than even Americans). Everytime I've called a customer service number and gotten one of the call centers in India, I can never understand a word they're saying.

    • What are you talking about with out bias look at some of the Indian blogs or news paper and what they write about Obama and see if that isn't Biased!!!! One called him a pimp and said he was very street! They have had bias issues due to their caste system that is based on skin color!!! Every culture has biased but things were getting better here and more accountable when some one messes up!! Now they are just outsourcing its disgusting and alot of Bull!!! Dont try to put a spin to it it is what it is OUTSOURCING!!!Its the reason half of my fellow grad students are in school now and still dont know if they are going to work when they get out!! It is a damn shame!

All Indians are not racist and biased but dont make assumptions that everyone in one country is not biased or racist cause that is "ludacris". that infuriates me that someone would be naive enough to believe that anyone could do it better than americans can do it.

Here is a link of an american paper that might outsource talking about the unbiased news coming from an indian group. Its because he is against outsourcing and so am I what is not patriotic about that???????

    • This bastard makes me sick he and people like him are the reason our country is losing its middle class, economy is being destroyed, urban communities are suffering form high unemployment that have higher degrees, outsourcing is killing our economy, and the reason people like me have to go to grad school to get a regular job. I hate dumb bastards like this the reson I really hate him is they dont go to people who speak english like Africa, caribbean countries, Dominican Republic ,Puerto Rico (who both speak english and spanish), oooh no they go to india where they are rude to you on the phone (an they know they wont be fired) cause they arent paying them anything either, its a damn shame when all americans who study english, journalism, history and international studies to get jobs like at a paper and cant. I cant wait till some one outsources this guys job and all those like him when they can see how it feels!!!! I had an undergraduate degree working for Nortel then Cisco and they did all of us like this and of course all of the minorites first then whites second...the indians were even in dorms on the third floor and could not leave or they would be deported and work 14 hour jobs for 6 $ an hour!!! This is almost like slavery and is destroying this country. Also this was the first year I was out of college who studied programming as a minor and then they let someone else do it for nothing outside the USA???? This should be a crime! I wanted to interogate this guy! Democrats like Hillary and Republicans alike have sold us down the river and thank God Obama had guts enough to speak on this injustice! I am sick of it it is downright disgusting!
How are they going to cover stories in the inner cities, things that happen to Blacks Latinos Asians-Americans??? How are they going to cover traffic?? I am so mad right now I am glad people are doing this story to show people the injustice guys like this are doing to our economy!! You look out for your own country first!! How do IBM ,Nortel,Cisco send money to help Asia before Katrina or Iowa???? Where is our governemnt?? What is happeing ot this country?? This should scare people!! Indians are experiencing economic booms and that is great while their darker skin (sudras) individuals suffer (because they arent below the poverty line .55 cents) while we are experiencing the highest unemployment in decades, largest foreclosures in decades, while Ron Paul and Mccain are yelling about tax breaks!?!?!?!? What is happening to this country?? I hope India is sucessful but not at the cost of Americans of all backgrounds getting the short end of the stick and that is how people should think if they want to raise a family and have future generations in this country! I hope this had made people think about this "outsourcing " crap. Its robbery of our economy and our jobs!!! The immigrants aren't taking jobs the outsourcing are!

    • A reporter must be able to investigate! To see a story before it occurs. That can not be done from 3,000 miles away! The beauty of Current is to see local stories as national stories and even international ones. To see a universal thread to the news that educates us all by involving us all. Perhaps I am an idealist... ok quite sure I am.

    • Nope it''s not outsourcing... he has the final edit.
Its using a available virtual talent pool. They see events live on-line. It''s not new - More and more larger news outfits do it.
So does most of the entertainment and film industry from London to Paris to New York to Milan.
It''s also the chance to get a guy with doctors or masters degree - to write a story in depth.
Plus get rid of any bias - other than reporting what happened - the facts.
Wire services like AP, Reuters, Bloomburg, etc.
have been doing this for decades - with text - sent to editors all over from reporters copy and notes.
Yes, there are issues like ''presence'' but then no...
they are there in a virtual way. And the bottom line is he gets the job done for his consumer and is able to be in business.
A lot of this is happening here where I am in Manila too - in fact - its become a growing trend.
You can call your sources - interview all consernded via VIOP.
Get reactions from people there also online as well.
      Plus no traffic, less hassles,
In the House and Senate for example a lot of the coverage is done via CSPAN watchers overseas.
and people looking at transcripts in London - Bangalore, and elsewhere- before it makes a wire service cut to local subscribers and readers.
Its how many cable channels cover the world.

    • he can dress it up all he wants in spin, but it''s outsourcing. it''s lazy and disingenious to say he''s a proud local service when he outsources local news.

    • Fascinating pod. While having local news in California reported from India concerns me, I don''t think it''s an inherently terrible idea. Because resources are so slim for local reporting, the quality and depth of the news invariably suffers. That Indian reporters can digitally "attend" city council meetings and report on them from across the globe is kind of cool, so long as they are paid fairly and their identity as a non-local is transparent.
Still, I prefer the community-driven approach taken by sites like Topix.
