it's cool, but they kind of exoticize the whole thing. ESPECIALLY whoever picked out the music! lol and that dude with his pseudo-mysticism, "the balls of flame are two spirits constantly chasing". and why does he bring up "the old native-american stories of the coyote and the fox"? what do native american folk tales have to do with an activity that originated in New Zealand with the Maori? i guess those "primitive" societies are all the same to you huh? lol jerk. but really, it kind of mocks the source tradition to take it so "transcendentally", right? ESPECIALLY if you're some teenage white boy from LA; not that it matters otherwise, but that is hugely removed from Poi's original purpose. or am i crazy?

I envy these people that do this so smoothly. Fire is something that has always absolutely fascinated me. I just wish I had the time to devote to this to this right now to move as effortlessly as they do. I plan to do some more practicing again this winter over break. Having snow everywhere is reassuring when playing with Fire.

I first saw fire Poi on a moonlit beach on Koh Lanta, an island in southern Thailand, performed by the Sea Gypsies who have been practicing this art since time immemorial. It was an unforgettable experience.

Speaking as someone who is both a minister and a professional fire performer, I found it interesting. It's also interesting how this has gained momentum in the last couple of decades. It seems to me that when I started years ago there were maybe 30 fire performers in CA. Since the advent of Burningman, and popularity of poi, and the change over into a trend that fire performing has become, fire has spread like, well, fire.
Now there are literally hundreds if not thousands of us. It certainly makes it easier to find social solace, but it also definitely makes it harder for me to make my living.
I wonder if it will blow over like fads sometimes do. I'm in for life, but I'm not so sure about others.Go check out my web site at
