this pod is good obviously but ive still to see a proper documentary on glasgows gangs they all seem to be about the really young ones the 13-17 year olds roughly but anyone in this part of the world knows that when your in one of these areas the gangs can be 10x worse than this as alot of the older ones come out to play and they 9 times out of 10 are out and out psychos.i have had the unfortunate experience of having a mob of at least 50 pricks with hatchets machetes and samurai swords deciding to chase me for no good reason other than minding my own buisness.there should be a doc.made in the east end perhaps,it is the worst side of the city for organised crime gangs, street gangs, stabbings, slashings and murders that make our cities murder rate that bad for a country where guns are banned.not enough exposure on the subject and until there is the problem wont really get addressed.the stuff that goes on in glasgows neighbourhoods that people dont hear about unless you live there is shocking.one example quite close to home and still angers me is a guy i knew quite well from my area who moved into the east end to live with his dad(this could happen anywhere in glasgow obviously) he was walking home from the city centre after a night out at 4am and decided to take a walk through a famously notorious area in glasgows southside that is next to his area and as he was walking home got ambushed by three gang members for nothing and got attacked with a hatchet machete and big chain.he got hit 64 timeswith the hatchet and machete on the head and body nevermind the chain.if that was in england or anywhere else it would make the news but he only got a crappy little article in the paper.its typical of glasgow though thats why things should change but obviously just wont.its the old'brush it under the carpet' mentality from the people in power hence the reason theres independent documentarys and rather disappointing documentaries on tv that just dont show whats really going on.its the exact same people in power that dont give exposure to the people getting murdered after rangers v celtic matches they just brush those murders under the carpet.if it was happenin in england it would be a major issue with plenty of exposure but because its scotland theres something in the way of it coming out and that is police and politicians puttin pressure on people not to do so.why else would there be a programme for bbc panorama on the subect where they actually said theres only one murder per year after these games when everyone else in glasgow knows thats just nonsense, theres alot more than that, sounds to me like ther 'expose'got changed into a cover up with the stats, its all really strange to me.

It's a real shame that you guys in Glasgow have this problem, but fortunately it doesn't seem to be as widespread as it is here in Los Angeles! I get the impression that the violence is basically restricted to only one (maybe two) areas in the city. I hope that one day gang violence won't be a problem anywhere in the world, but the truth is that that's a very unrealistic dream...

nah not really dude, theres 170 street gangs in glasgow and the young mobs out on the street are all like this but its worse than what this lets on by far,if you arent in a posh middle class area its all like this, these are just little guys, there will be older ones not showing there face on camers etc thats what happens when they send camera crews into glasgow its just the younger ones 16 and 17 wanting to go on camera, and also theres alot of organised crime gangs but glasgows got 170 street gangs same number as london and tthey have 7 million people livin there we only have 700 000.but its definetley a different place to l.a over there you have assholes in gangs that just spray machine guns about, not caring who the hit, over here if a hit is happenin its by organised gangs for money and they make sure everything is done not to kill any innocent member of the public, theres more of that old school underworld code over here of not killing innocent people, over there it seems your gang members just dont care who they hit in drive bys etc.also over there i imaginre you get little idiots that havent been in fights etc just little pricks that pick up a gun and think theyre gangsters.over here its a case of them being in fights against the other mob constantly well before their teens then by the time they have hit their teens they are already well into using weapons and "chibs"( blades) then if your unfortunate to be walking past a mob of them out on the street when theyre out there face on booze and eccies/valium whatever thats when you need to worry about gettin chased and stabbed up/slashed and getting a severe doing. probably not painting a good image of my city so i'll stop lol, think ive wrote a bit much anyway lol peace :-)

Although this was a great pod at highlighting some of the major cultural problems in glasgow, I (as a glasweigan) feel that it took these problems out of context.
Despite what the statistics (which i always try to do with any kind of cultural statistic) say, in reality glasgow is very much the same as any large european, international city , it has its dark rough areas but equaly as many if not more "affluent" and safe areas.
My point simlply is Glasgow is a CITY, and although cultures between citys may change the same basic problems are in all of them and the sooner we all stop viewing our citys as individal social distaster sites and realise and start to tackle the problems the the quicker the world will become a better place. - 4 years ago

Hey. Good Pod.
I did a documentary two years ago with the gangs in Barmulloch, in the north of Glasgow ( The Barmulloch Gringo). The gang kids did most of the filming and we showed their work in the local community.
It was amazing the change you saw in some of them, when they were given a chance to see that there is more to the world than what's on their front door step.
It's amazing the amount of youth work that's going on for these people. The only problem is the few that don't embrace it and still have the " there's nothing for us to do here but fight" attitude.
You can check out the Gringo's website here :

good pod however may need to do one on how glasgow has developed as a city too. The young boy had good intentions but was it really needed. Scotland gets slated as it is, dont need anymore excuses. Yes some parts are really bad but so many others cities ie: nottingham etc are proberley not far behind. My family grew up there and I love to visit there as its a up and growning city.
Now lets do a POD on the good side too. - 4 years ago

So Glasgow like any City has it's bad areas and kids that are up to no good, however Glasgow is where I come from and want to let you all know that's it's a great place. Glaswegian friendliness, courtesy and helpfulness proffered to visitors from abroad is legendary. So my American friends please remember that when you visit Scotland... don't forget about one of the best Cities in the world. Glasgow. I want to see another Pod about the other side of the City. Please feel free to email me all your suggestions for a Pod and let's put one together. scott@current.com

The vicious violence seemed staggering at first, I had no idea that Glasgow was engulfed in abject poverty at that level, it was a wicked sick pod and great to watch.
