Unless you are staunchly against premarital sex, the whole point of marriage is to bring the families into the relationship. A healthy, loving relationship doesn't need a marriage, unless the people in the relationship need their families and friends to legitimize it the couple.

I'd say date for 20 years before you figure out if you should be married... by then you ought to know.

I'm still torn on the marriage debate. My boyfriend and I have a child together and are happy the way we are. We always said we wanted to be married before we had children, but we didn't make it. We thought it was a hassle to try to put togther a ceremony and all before I got too big to wear a decent dress. A wedding will not define our love for each other, just makes us spend more money. Being married does bring decent benefits in the eyes of the government, but we got that covered so it doen't matter. We're happily unmarried for now and enjoying life!

Not as much as the love between two people. The way I see it, marriage is just the icing on the cake. The connection 2 people have is what it's really about. If that connection is broken, there is no wedding that could fix that.

Personally I just wouldn't want to be described as anyone's 'wife'. Horrible word, and for me, no good connotations. This New Scientist article (click the URL) explains the socio-economic reasons why 'people who wed have longer life expectancy, lower death rates and better psychological wellbeing than those who remain unmarried'.
