Cyprus Divided

rawbird
A 30-year military stand-off on the island of Cyprus continues to divide its people to this day. The city of Nicosia is literally split down the middle as Greek and Turkish Cypriots live on in entirely separate lives.

    • The situation in Cyprus is not as bleak as it seems, the opening of Ledra Street is one example of a step which brings the island closer to reunification.

      alana_k,

Brilliant and timely report on the opening of Ledra Street, it is enlightened activity--good for the soul of the country, unity, and business. Please continue to film and report on Cyprus as I am making a feature on split cities around the world and your skills and vision could be of use. Look forward to my recent report on the split city of Belfast.

      Yours,

      Adam Fish

    • This is a piece on which I commented on 3 months ago. But since it is now listed under a new title I am reposting.

I was born and raised in Cyprus and I have to say that you have made a good effort in putting this issue in perspective. It is very hard to achieve in 8 minutes and there are a lot of points that need to be elaborated more in order to give the full perspective. I think that your last three points are the most important and they explain better what was said earlier. The occupied area is not recognized as a country (even though there are advertisements for it in the London underground) and that is why your passport was not stamped. The american scholar was speaking for the Turkish-Cypriot part and that was not clear, at the time because Nicosia and Cyprus as you pointed out at the end with the reference to the Cyprus Pound is a strong economy. But the occupied part is the opposite but there are a lot of grands that now go towards them. More importantly though, it was not mentioned why 75% of the Greek Cypriots did not vote in favor of the referendum.

It is not because they do not want a solution. It is because they need a working solution and not an enforced solution like it was done in 1960 and one which let the 1974 invasion as well as the conflicts before that, between some members of the two communities.

As for "Honest's" comment, it is anything but honest. A classic one sided Turkish point of view. Let's not forget that Cyprus has more than 10,000 years of continuous civilization and some 400 or so of those where under Ottoman occupation, just like Cyprus was under Roman and British occupation. Bad things happened from both sides but the main concern is how we move forward and how do you propose a working solution when 200,000 people are refugees in their own country while in the Turkish occupied area, children who were born after 1974 do feel as Turkish-Cypriots, even though their parents were settlers from Turkey who were imported in order to change the 98% to 12% proportion in the population.

Also on another point. Let's not forget that before the 1955-1959 revolutionary war, the British who had control of the island, invented the terms Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots for the obvious reasons of divide and rule.

Once again though, as an outsider and given the duration of the piece, this was a very good effort.

    • I would have never known about this conflict if you hadn't made it. In fact, I had an essay to do about conflicts outside of the United States, and this pod came on at the most perfect time- you absolutely saved my grade. Thank you so much for creating this pod!

    • Cyprus was rulled by Ottoman Empire and obiusly was rulled in piece by Ottomans. All greeks live in OTTOMANS LAND WERE TREADED FAIR.tHAT IS WHY THEY WERE NOT VIPED FROM THE LANDS THAT THEY LIVED IN.
If Turkish cypriots were not CONTINUS and SISTEMATICLY ATTACT BY GREEKS,(1963 MASSACARE OF TURKISH CYPRIOTS)TURKISH ARMY WOULD NOT COME TO PROTECT THEIR CITIZENS.LAND WOULD NOT BE DIVIDED.TURKEY IS STILL LOOKING FOR PIECEFULL SOLUTION AND THAT SHOULD BE DECIDED BETWEEN TWO SIDES IN CYPRUS.
