Slum Safari

bindumathur
I always felt uneasy with the idea of guided tour of a slum as part of a tourist itinerary of Rio de Janeiro - is it just shameless voyeurism or a way to experience the favela, where many argue lies the cultural heart of the city? For this film, I embark on a rather unusual journey to experience first-hand this new industry of favela tourism - from cruising through Rochina in the back of a jeep with a bunch of scared tourists to staying in a Favela Hotel wondering if the gunshots will keep me up at night. Along the way I speak to tourists, residents and guides to find out whether favela tourism helps the community or exploits it.

    • Nice story. I find the whole Current-TV channel to be highly addictive. Although I found it a bit odd to see this was a tourist type activity, and it does seem a little exploitive, I enjoyed seeing the community feel of the culture. I didn't come from an environment quite like that, but much like there, that feel of community unity is what I recall most. I find a more real, peaceful (in a certain way) and down to earth mentality that seems rare or genuine in other areas from the preceived better/higher income neigborhoods. Just my observation anyway.

    • "Amendoim" (means peanut in portugues), is certainly a charachter in Rocinha. He works at the Uruarama Gavea Clube on the otherside of Rocinha (the Gavea part)

    • Very Good Pod... People can be happy in any situation if they so choose. Hmm- How many people "have things" but are still sad about this or stressed about that? This pod sent a profound message: "Sometimes to NOT have is to be happy and free... "

Yeah right. Would you swap places?
There is nothing romantic or happy or free about living in poverty and misery.
I have heard only people who have say things like this.

    • Love it!!
Im glad you pointed out the fact that people living in the Favelas are seen as animals are on a safari. This just goes to show how people like to reinforce their cultural superiority by looking down on others. (People's ignorance and state of mind has not changed since the colonial times when foreigners were brought to Britain and exhibited.)

Thanks for giving us a more down to earth insight into Rio!

    • Great job Bindu.
Yes the best way to experience a day in the slam is to really spend a day with the residence, walking, eating and hanging with them 24hrs.

    • Great documentary. Rather than going for the typical sensationist stories of Rio, Bindu looks at the banal reality of living in one of South America's largest favelas. She makes some interesting points about the dangers of of a type of tourism whose profits depend upon poverty, and whose clients satisfaction increases in direct correlation with its severity.
