Wrong
The license in my state says nothing about god and is issued by the state.
Have you ever heard of the First Amendment?
You know that pesky little part about the separation of church and state?

Paulathesurfmom:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."
Separation of church and state? Not seeing it...
Separation of church and state was noted in a letter between James Madison and Thomas Jefferson, and has never been lawfully admitted into our governmental system.
I suggest you study your own Constitution before you "cite" it.

Paulathesurfmom:
wow, mrpibb, if you actually read what you quoted and thought about it, you'd realize why not only gay marriage should be allowed, but why intelligent design/creationism is ILLEGAL to teach in public schools, why prayer is not permitted there either, why the ten commandments should have nothing to do with a court of a law (for justice is blind), and why there are no mentions of christianity, judaism, islam, or any of the material included in their required readings in the constitution. Allowing gay marriage because it's against the christian idea of its institution of marriage would be allowing the government to make laws respecting establishments of religion (said amendment's words were expanded to encompass more things throughout several supreme court cases involving religious bigots).
I suggest you study your own Constitution before you "cite" it.

Marriage is not a right!!!! It's an establishment, an establishment made by God and controlled by God.

So a justice of the peace is a clergyman now? Marriage is a legal definition of a commitment made by two people.

mrpibb19:
Marriage as it is and has always been defined is a union inseperable by God between one man and one woman... it's not a religion, it's our history, it's life.
Because we were founded as a Judeo-Christian nation, our government has incorporated marriage into our laws...

mrpibb19:
Marriage is not just Christianity, it's everywhere and every religion and no religion (that means marriage doesn't have to be a religious union inseparable by God). So it's not just defined as one man and one woman.
BTW, I don't believe in religion, so it doesn't factor much into the issue, at least to me. - 3 years ago

You don't believe in religion... and you obviously don't believe in studying up on a source like marriage before you hastily correct someone.

Good reply, guy who obviously does not support my view of heterosexual marriages but calls me a homosexual...
You've lost your argument and now you've resorted to calling me names... KUDOS TO YOU!
You need to look in the mirror and see who's the raging homosexual. - 3 years ago

No, a flamer is someone who tries to argue repeatedly online, like a forum or comment section, not a homosexual. Kinda like internet trolls.

I, like the rest of humankind, am a product of an intelligent Creator. Our government was built on Christian principles; removing my "religion" is like removing the foundation of our government.

Ok, so all marriages between any man or woman that are processed without being done in a church are therefore null and void, right?
I'm not gay and I don't subscribe to your religion. Is my marriage now void?
You and people like you seem to be missing the point. Your concept of marriage is being united by God. That is done by a preacher, NOT by some tired, unhappy state employee.
Just because someone wants the same *LEGAL* rights as you doesn't impinge upon your religion, it doesn't defy your God. How about all the other people of religions other than Christianity? Our country wasn't simply founded on Christianity. It used the predominant religion as a model, it was included for those people within the founding government to appease all.
If you want to start citing these silly things like the constitution and fundamental rights granted by our forefathers, remember one that should be very clear to you here.
FREEDOM. OF. RELIGION.
Or maybe even SEPERATION OF CHURCH AND STATE.
Don't sit here and whine and cry because you're uncomfortable with someone else's lifestyle. No one is coming into your home and forcing you to believe one thing or the other.
Except of course, your church.

except that hundreds of religions, groups, movements, tribes, etc. had marriage, gay and straight alike, LONG before the earliest of your books about god were written.

For some straight couples marriage is really exciting and important, for others they live together as common law husband and wife and never want to get "legally" married. So why should it be any different for gay people? Some are excited to tie the knot, others say its not for them.
Why should we deny any Americans the right to get equal tax benefits, to choose who they want to visit them in the hospital if they are hurt or dying, and who they want to share their life with? - 3 years ago

I have been with my partner for 10 years, I love her so much it hurts some days. We don't live in a state with gay marriage and if not for the fact that I want to be treated just like everyone else, I would not care about the paper that say we are committed to each other.

For the same reason segregation doesn't work.
"separate, but equal" is not equal. Words change meanings, take linguistics and see for yourself how drastically different language is now than it was back then. Including another group in the marriage word is no bigger of a deal than allowing interracial marriage, something the conservative christian right/wrong had serious issues with back in the day...

Here's hoping that people will realize that Freedom and America being synonymous shouldn't be limited to your ideology, religion or political beliefs. Either you have freedom or you don't.
How is this issue different than women's rights? Those of minorities? We've come a long way as a country. Rights and freedoms should be allowed to every citizen. By picking and choosing when those freedoms are applied, you open yourselves up to those same tyrannies and opressions that we're supposedly fighting a war over.

While getting a legal document stating that so and so is henceforth married to so and so is somewhat bizarre to me. If a gay couple wants to get married then so be it. There is a lot of children that need to be adopted. The world needs help raising orphans. Remember, with marriage comes divorce!
