In Europe women can be topless at any pool they want. Yet I don't see that our kids are "damaged" in any way or that kids need to be protected from others people body.
You Americans are obsessed with taking stupid measures to protect of children when there are no real dangers to them. I wonder how there are still live kids in Africa or Pacific because there they could see even totally naked bodies all day every day.

Stupid ban to begin with. Bikinis are not corrupting and sexualizing people. If they REALLY wanted to do something about sexuality in their community, they should concentrate on banning TV and sex outright, not swimwear.

Righteous and fundamentalist as this sounds, most people would feel differently if they were moms or dads to young girls who see and want to wear bikinis. Most dads would admit they know what goes through a guy's mind when he sees a girl in a bikini. They wouldn't want that girl to be THEIR daughter. Yes it is just like walking around in a bra and panty! I have no religious affiliation whatsoever but I tell my girls this: " Dressing decently means that you respect your body and a girl who respects her body respects herself.
A girl who respects herself, commands and gets respect from ALL" - 3 years ago

"Christian" means to be "Christ-like." When Jesus Christ looked at a person, He looked at the heart. Christians should be able to do the same. "Just like a bra and underwear," says who? Thats a heart issue, and only God knows the answer.

This is a dumb video making a brouhaha out of nothing. The city council repealed the ban before it ever went into affect. This news item is already over a month old, but is just now showing up on current.com?

In defense of Mormon politicians, Mitt Romney was the governor of one of the most liberal states in the union, and the most powerful Democrat in the Senate is a Mormon. At any rate, they can't be any more religious than George Bush or any other Christian politician, who holds a weekly conference call with evangelicals. I think the bikini goofiness has as much to do with small town life as it does with Mormons.
On a side note, I think Scott Lambson is related to the Lambson family that ran Mount Vernon Academy in Murray, UT. I attended that school during my sophomore year.

I think modesty is just one of the ways we are being controlled in, by people having power. I wonder what would have happened if somebody said cheeks or lips are sexual parts and are to be ashamed of. And plus, nudity does not equal sex, unless someone is really perverted to only have that in mind. What do you think?

For example the religious sects in many countries who preach good over evil then abuse the young in their care who are two scared to retaliate for fear of excommunication etc.

This is a great little pod, I like it.
Personally, even though I'm completely non-religious, I kind of like the idea of modesty, and people being more than a sum of their parts, and bodies being partially covered up, cos who wants to see all that flesh all the time anyway? Life ends up being like a big ol' 'I look better than you naked' fashion parade, which is just a bit sad.
But at a swimming pool or on a beach? Surely that's the best time to wander about in practically your underwear, cos its hot and you're swimming.
I would have liked to hear in the pod what it is about a bikini (or what you see when someone's wearing a bikini) that's so unpleasant for this community - what exactly do they project to? Is a bikini-clad body automatically a sexualised body, and is that the problem?
But why does this need to be forced on people? Why don't people choose *not* to put all their flesh out there, apart from the obvious suntan motivations?

Wow, I live in Utah and this is the first I've heard of this.
I am not Mormon, and I strongly disagree with this new rule. Why would someone else care about what I am wearing? The only body parts being hidden by this new rule is the stomach and lower back. Is that really a big deal?
Also, I don't understand why seeing someone else's body is such a big deal, I am not ashamed of my body and no one else should be ashamed of their's. I for one, am all down for nudity. I don't see the point in being embarrassed about your body if everyone of your gender looks almost exactly the same.

Where is the controversy? The bikini is only banned at this new pool and the majority of citizens seem to support it. What is the implication of this story? That towns shouldn't be able to enact their own laws? It's not like this is nation wide or something. I don't even see why this is news. It really don't concern anyone who doesn't live there.

Yes. we should all be ashamed of our bodies and cover up as much of our unholy skin as possible, its only logical! Thank you radical Utah christians for showing us just how crazy and shameful we are. Full disclosure: I am ardently pro-bikini because I have conservative, anti-bikini parents. I am profoundly resentful about never having worn a bikini when I was a cute teenager. :(
Having watched the pod, I'm not as offended as I was when I initially read the rather misleading headline. It's a public pool that is frequented by kids, and the town -- itself mostly Mormon -- is legislating a degree of modesty in public places. In context, it doesn't seem like much of a controversy at all... least of all to the citizens of Kanab.

I like to be naked and i want my child to feel comfortable in her own skin. It sounds a lot like that community is ashamed of the human body and they want there children to be ashamed of their bodies as well. They say it is modesty and that the world lacks modesty. The truth is that after so many years of so called modesty the world is horny and this town just wants to be secret about their sexuality. hmm sounds like a good place for a transvestite to live lol.

Oddly the people in the story sounded half-way intelligent in making their points. I wanted to crack a lot of stuck up conservative LDS jokes but they seem to temper themselves as far as enforcing their arcane beliefs on others. I think that city council is dancing on the fine line between church and state and any good ACLU member could have a field day with them if they wanted - or in this case a day at the pool.

Here's the thing, look how many kids are at the pool. Like 90%. It's a family environment. It's a family friendly town. I can see why they are trying to protect the kids. What's interesting, is that when this pool opened there was no bikini ban in place, and yet I can't see one bikini being worn. These people are just more modest than most of America. What's wrong with that? And in the end the city council repealed the ban, so they actually sound pretty normal to me. No reason to slam these law abiding American citizens.
