self depreciating humor is totally absent in that part of the world. you are not taught to laugh at would be potentially thought of a a personal flaw. I will give nissan credit for rejecting my ad featuring the suicide bombers that said their Nissan versa was too small for a decent bomb

omg, lighten up this commercial is hilarious, i love it, plus it's not poking at all arabs, just the money hungry oil tycoons, obviously.
The only reason someone would be offended would be for attention. The United States doesn't get mad when everyone complains that they are power hungry, they just take over the country that complains or makes threats, just like the oil tycoons shouldn't get mad, they should be happy they have so much money.
sorry if this offends, it is just my opinion - 3 years ago

If theres anything that Albert Brooks's 'Looking for Comedy in The Muslim World' taught me, it's that the sense of humor of some Islamic people is pretty pathetic. Oh and that the Indian-Pakistani border looks just like the American-Mexican border where Sylar crosses in that one episode of 'Heroes'...

This is Citroen's UK/irish ad campaign for the C5. It relies *entirely* on stereotypical notions of the French and Germans.
http://ie.youtube.com/watch?v=GMQnPWjK5pE
There has been no uproar, no calls for boycotts, no lunacy of any kind - because it's just an ad.
When people wig out over entirely harmless jokes, they appear as deranged lunatics. There is a very deep irony involved in people going whackjob over an ad that portrays them as being people likely to go whackjob.

Unfortunately for the argument for cultural superiority you're trying to frame, the commercial you link to belies your point. The Citroen ad, unlike the Nissan ad, doesn't rely on *negative* ethnic stereotyping. Sausages, duels, Wagner, and busty German blondes are all positive. The Citroen ad is an appeal to cultural inclusion: co-opting positive German stereotypes (including the idea of "fine German engineering") for a French automobile. The Nissan ad, on the other hand, is exclusionary: buy this car to make the villanous Arabs angry.

They were going for humor, but the controversy is legitimate because the marketing company was clearly looking to capitalize on anti-Arab sentiment in Israel. The fact that they ran this ad in Israel and nowhere else is telling - that means they knew people might be receptive to this kind of stereotyping in Israel but probably not elsewhere. They could have easily made the same joke with a group of oil executives instead of Arab oilmen, but that would have sacrificed the bonus of lampooning a specific ethnic group.
Characters in ads tend to be taken as gross generalizations, and depicting Arabs as a group as regressive, villainous oil tycoons is stupid and insensitive. Just because Arab oil tycoons exist doesn't mean companies should engage in simple-minded stereotyping to sell cars.

I think that Nissan should've been more responsible when putting this Ad out. Even if it was unintentinial you need to stop and think that alot of people will take jokes like that seriously.

I think this ad is hilarious and to the point. If people want to sell their car because of an ad and not because it is damaging our environment then we are in some serious denial. The point is that the car runs better and cleaner, the ad's theme just delivers it in a very funny way.

I don't think it's the humor itself as where the humor came from that's inflaming all the rhetoric. Like an old, married couple that insult each other over differences in stories from several decades ago... Sometimes, the source of the "humor" makes all the difference!

its definitely funny, i don't see anyone denying that. but the marketing team should've known it would have gotten ripped a new one for it.

Oh for crying out loud - when Toyota relaunched the Avensis in Britain they used ads which portrayed those who bought competitor's products as loud, arrogant prats. Did the prats in question, or the people who make pratty cars go nuts in response? No, because it's just an ad.
There are bigger things to worry about than a not-very-important ad in a not-very-important part of the world for a not-very-important car.

It is funny. Point blank, Arabs need to get a sense of humor. They couldn't even handle that Danish comic. GROW UP! Laugh a little. Life is to short. Your 77 virgins aren't going anywhere.

No sense of humor. The only people in the world who are out of the realm of satire and humor are Arabs/Muslims. Definitely not racist.

Look, the Saudis have a strangle-hold on Oil which pits everyone against them. I think the ad is very funny because really, the last thing OPEC wants is us to stop using oil. There is an equilibrium where they still make more money than God and we still get to buy things other than GAS!
We just haven't found that yet. So, I feel they don't have a sense of humor but I certainly wouldn't expect a country that doesn't allow women to drive cars to laugh at themselves.
I'm actually RojoGatto's dad (forgot to sign-in as myself :)

I think that the Islamic people are being closed minded. They can't have the Koran anywhere but the top shelf at Borders and now they get offended when someone points out that a new car saves gas. I say we air that commercial day and night until they start to laugh.

Theres nothing wrong with this.
It's funny, people need to grow up.
It's an ad, and it gets the point across.. its fuel efficient. If theres something wrong with this ad, then all those "are you to fat" ads should go to.
pretty much the same thing.
