As a Freelance Severe Weather Journalist, Doug has chased ice storms, blizzards, thunderstorms and tornadoes. In August 2005, his job brought him to New Orleans, Louisiana to cover Hurricane Katrina. In his first of a series of Pods on Katrina, Doug monitors the voluntary evacuation the day before the storm. He also takes a stroll down the French quarters where he finds some worried business owners preparing for the storm, as well as people still partying.

That gridlock is a picture perfect match to what I witnessed four days ago when evacuating from Gustav... twenty-one hours to reach a destination normally just six hours away. You'd think that they might have figured out something more effective three years later. Once contraflow (NOT "counterflow") gets put into effect, that's when everyone really starts taking these things seriously. Props to this guy for sticking it out. I imagine it certainly was one really epic experience.
