Match of the Gay

davebarras
The world of Scottish football is as macho a world as you're ever likely to be in. Hotscot FC are the only gay football team in the country. The jokes come thick and fast, they 'play for the other side,' they 'have trouble sharing balls,' but the slurs come also. They've been called names and been accused of further excluding gay people from the footballing community.

It's early day for the team but they have dreams of appearing in the Gay World Cup in 2008 and must try to move up to an 11 a side team.

    • It's all in the motive. If they want to be able to make gay comments and play grab ass during a match, then yeah, make your own "gay" team. If you really want to eventually integrate then quit with the exclusivity, don't ask don't tell, take a vocal stand for those that do come out, and hopefully one day there will be no closet to come out of.

    • "They've been called names and been accused of further excluding gay people from the footballing community."

Interesting. This reminds me of the Harlem Globetrotters. They were criticised for supposedly bringing the wrong kind of attention to black basketball players: because they were deliberately separated from mainstream basketball and because they were "clowns". But they helped to raise the profile of black players in what was, at the time, still predominantly a white man's game. And just look at the NBA today!

Creating special spin-off groups just for minorities may seem to go against the notion of including them in the mainstream, but it does tend to pay off in the end.

    • I think its sad that footballers don't feel or aren't able to come out. I think open the door boys and jump out - I will support you and love you more for it.

    • I think we will be waiting a while for a pro footballer (soccer) to come out, the level of homophobia that would be directed at them would make their life unbearable, and I'm not just imagining opposition fans.

    • This is a masterpiece of concise storytelling, and it sets up a really interesting question - why does football have such a big problem with sexuality?
