Young Indian Suicides

NidhiSharma
As the pressures on students to over-perform and competition for admission to the top universities increases, so do the suicide rates of young adults across India.

    • I don't think there's a problem with focusing on examinations. If one can only perform well on homework, one hasn't learned very well or aren't very efficiently and should be helped. In fact, only assessments, projects, presentations, and papers should count. Homework should be completely optional.

The issue is with how society handles the exams as well as underlying problems in the system. The students should be prepared with assistance, not harsh pressure. The educational systems are generally inefficient. I think we could have the average 12 year old working on calculus, if there were a better system.

    • I know the feeling... in my country, the high school final exams are crazy hard! Back home, brains was everything. No one cares if you are artistic or musical or athletic. The bottom line, to most parents is this: are you going to be a lawyer, an engineer, or a doctor? And the questions start when you are in high school!

    • I was in the IB program at my school till last year for this reason. I go to Suncoast High, currently rated #1 in Florida, and #3 in the Nation, and as we are such, we currently have an ongoing psychological study to assess the effects of the program with the resulting suicides.

...I hope we can solve these issues.

    • on the other hand, it's amazing to see how articulate and focused this makes the students, as demonstrated by this video.

Yes it is good that the profile has been raised regarding education in India. There are multiple pressures on kids to over perform. Parents make the ultimate sacrifice for the education of their offspring and their children are very aware of this. Also there is not the same stimulation = that there is in the west - re teaching aids, field trips, personal tutorials etc., Some pupils feel marginalised too if their religion is a minority religion at a particular educational establishment. They feel that their teacher is not giving of their best to them because of this. I know this for a fact as I sponsor somebody in India.

    • We need balance on this planet. Yes, we need to have intelligent people and our educational system needs to set high standards. The exams must be fair. Our children are all precious- all of them not just the ones who can cram loads and loads of information into their brains without exploding from the pressure of it all! We need global balance.

    • Sounds like these kids are under a lot of pressure, but truth is, what kids aren't? In France, the Baccalaureat exam puts undue amount of pressure on the high school students there, as well.
