some persons are making reference to the bible withoutspecific or correct reference, Leviticus 20 v 13 :"if a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them."
Additionally, it is against the laws of the land of Jamaica, and finally morally, culturally we Jamaicans disagree with homosexuality, so why is it that gays are forcing their "human rights" upon us all. apparently their human rights are more important than all others.
Well we still have freedom of speech and as such we, Jamaicans maintain, in the words of Rodney "bounty Killer" Pryce "Well a who some B@##yman, nuh want dem around wi". They need to take it elsewhere and stop force it upon others.
Peace out

if you're using the bible then don't stop there, how about Leviticus 11:9-12 and Deuteronomy 14:9-10? surely you follow those ones to a t right?
don't try to act like it has anything to do with jamaican culture. culturally it was ok (in the u.s.) to make black people work for whites for free.
both the scripture you mentioned and the singer bounty killer advocate killing gays. do you think that is ok?

I'm Jamaican too and I KNOW 4 A FACT THAT BEING GAY IN JAMAICA IS THE SCARIEST THING 4 A HOMOSEXUAL. I euologize this police for coming out b/c he was very courageous. The homophobic vibes comes from everywhere in the culture, mostly in the songs. For instance, "Boom Bye BYe" by Buju Banton. Songs like these promets gay hatred insead of trying to come on a common gorund. I have no doubt that one day Jamaica will allow gays since there are already some in Kingston, well A LOT!

Gay, black, women,.. we've always been suppress, and if any of us could have chosen at conception, most likely we would choose to be anything other than the above. But it's not our choice, and how dear we go against God's WILL? THose of us who think we have the right to judge, where is that memo that gave you that right? We are all God's people, JUST RESPECT IT!!!

Gays will never be able to speak up for rights in which they will never have in Jamaica, you hear about gays being brutally attacked and killed way too often and if they are found out they will be hunted. This is the type of behavior that a fire is blazed on, on a daily basis this(battymanism) is not something that can be forced on the Jamaican society and if you guys think the slaves revolts were brutal try to force it upon us and see what the turn out would be............it is not the life that we support and it isn't welcomed here....... peace out :-)

its easy for someone to be on the outside looking in and passing judgment on us Jamaicans , but living here its another thing. Children are being raped little boys and girls are being kidnapped and raped in their asses then murdered and who do u think is responsible? ppl should be allowed to make their own choices and as such choose who they want to be with but that don't mean u should try to force your opinions or way of life on others , that should be kept to your self.if u force it on ppl then you cant be upset when they react in how ever manner they see fit.

This is a topic that has pervaded the media and various conversations for eons, locally and internationally. The truth is, nobody has a right to inflict bodily harm on ANYONE regardless. It has nothing to do with being gay, straight, black, white or green. Civility dictates that we conduct ourselves in a particular manner towards our fellow humans and each of us has the right to expect that from the other. With that said however, unfortunately there are some truths when it comes to Jamaicans and gays. The term homophobic has been coined to describe, inter alia, nation of people, i.e. Jamaicans, who are intolerant of a people who have chosen a particular “lifestyle”. The terms CHOSEN and LIFESTYLE are deliberately used here as it is often so suggested. I think however, the truth is that people will never truly know why someone would prefer to have a relationship with a person of the same sex. However, it’s not for anyone to deem these persons a pariah and seek at all costs to annihilate them from society. That is not your right! On the other hand the Christian community clearly will take issue to the mere suggestion that homosexuality is 'ok'. In Jamaica, the vilest criminal has had some sort of Christian influence in his life. It’s just the way it is. Maybe where Jamaicans need to get to is recognizing that there are people out there of 'deviant behaviour' and there's nothing that can be done about it. But a predominantly Christian nation should not be compelled to ‘accept’ something that does not fit in with our morals and belief systems just because other countries see nothing wrong with it. In the same way a homosexual has every right to practice his chosen lifestyle in the privacy of his abode, I believe there is the right of each heterosexual to NOT be offended by what he/she considers abnormal. Rights don’t just go one way.

its funny that people think that Christianity teaches homophobia.. which is not true
remember that the bible unlike the Koran was edited tremendously
everything should be taken with a grain of saltthink of it
G-d's greatest gift was love..
to not take advantage of this gift is a sin in of itself
and He did not give others the right to judge.. that is for Him to dosecondly: Homophobia in Jamaica
traditionally it started in the School systems where boys and girls were isolated
the Media (key to the homophobia)
made a grandiose point of finding teachers with students, especially if it was same sex
Note: Homosexuality and Pedophilia are totally different .. but in a developing nation like this it will take awhile to separate and understand bothI do not condone Pedophilia but it has nothing to do with homosexuality
I love my country and plan to do great things for it
the greatest thing about Christianity is that it teaches us that we should always be an example and so I shall be - 3 years ago

I am a gay Jamaican , I leave Jamaica at age 12 in 1974, looking at me with naked eye one could not tell especially the fact I have a 28 and 26 year old sons. I personally believe more than 70 percent of Jamaican males are gay, we all put on a act out of fear ridicule and abuse. It is not true 70%? Please, why would you expose yourself if you do not know what other person is thinking? The real problem is that there is an element of illiteracy in the country that fuel this type hostility in the mind of certain elements. I respect the brother for his courage in the JCF, I met quite a few former JCF members here in NYC that were some freaks in bed, so I know he is not the only one. I however think one does not have to admit one's sexuality to anyone, let them make the accusation, I have a right to remain "SILENT".

Jamaican is not the only place in the world that has a problem with Gays. Although i have lived in Jamaica for almost 8 years now, my country of birth England has demonstrated more violence towards Gays than Jamaicans. Wrong is just wrong and I think it is time that we all acknowledge the damage that we are doing to the world by giving these people a platform. Whilst I don't condone violence towards any one, I wish that the world would pay some attention to the violence Black people have suffered and still suffering from White people. Every since you all came to Afrika many many years ago and are still there now. Even in America White people are still racist in a country that belongs to people with colour the Native Indians. I say no to same sex relationships
there is no place for them in our word giving these people right leaves all of us in a serious threat of destruction from nature. - 3 years ago

Addressing Mr. Spiceman. If i am sleeping i dont wanna wake up. I'm a Jamaican and FYI this is a problem that sooner or later will reach into your homes. Now for the real meat of the matter............ Homosexuality is not the reason why Jamaica is a third world country. and both you and i know that. so if you are looking for a point to justify your immature and immoral comments,in the words of our dear jamaicans "yuh betta come an come good". As far as i am concerned you have no sense of reasoning. I pity you condoning people on judgement day because with these kinds of attitudes you'll never survive the wrath. THANK YOU.

we need healing indeed healing for all the sins that we have all committed. people believe that just because jamaicans do not condone this type of homosexual living that we need to 'come to reality' or that we are in the dark. BUT i have something for you! i was born in jamaica raised in america i have had the best of both worlds. however where ever i go im still a christian which is the main concept. to respond to donkeyfly69. no offence but homosexuality is not condoned by God. DONT YOU DARE TELL ME THAT I DONT KNOW MY BIBLE I THINK YOU SHOULD TRY READS YOURS AND STOP BEING IGNORANT! why do you think that God made a male and female in the beginning? why is it that God had to cast fire and brimstone on sodom and gomarrow? why is it that the Bible says not to condone in this sin? i used to hang out with homosexual people- they are as normal as normal can get but i dont condone what they do and i dont judge them for only God knows the heart. I go with the Bible as best as possible and God doesnt like that. so dont you dare say that we should be enlightened or that we are ignorant and missing out. the Bible did say that the wages of sin is death BUT the gift of God is eternal life. and just like how sodom and gommarow was burnt with fire and brimstone so will this earth because, yes you are right, one day even jamaica will publicly condone this nonsense and thus this land will also burn. and about why i didnt say anything about the sex rate in jamaica is because that wasn't the issue at hand homosexuality is.

First let me say this, I don't agree with Gay Bashing. On the other hand the outside world must understand that we the Jamaican people don't accept that sort of behavior and that practice is against the law there. Like Admiral Baily song " wi nuh seh b***y man nuh deh a Jamaica but dem cyaah magle pan wi pan nuh caana" in essence we are saying " yes, there are Gays in Jamaica but they must NOT flaunt the acts at us and expect us to accept it. There are cultural differences and laws all over the world. That's ours and like then Prime Minister PJ Patterson said to the human rights organization, "Homosexuality is a crime in Jamaica and he is not let ANYBODY from other countries come and tell him how to run his country" Just like I live in the US and I can't do the things I'm accustom to do back in Jamaica, as the first thing cops or anyone would say " you are in America NOT Jamaica" So it is what it is and it will never change. If someone want to live that lifestyle then go elsewhere because Jamaicans will NEVER accept that.

I aplaude the Jamaican police for speaking out and not supporting such rubbish.
Being GAy is a choice and if someone choices to be gay then they should be aware of what comes along with such a decision. Because you chose to be gay, why should others be forced to accept your choice?
Western influence has truly affected the moral values of the younger generations. And it is very sad. when I look on line and see all the young men showing off their nakedness on line, it makes me very sad.
I am a Jamaican living in the USA, I have been living here for over 20yrs and I am sadden by how the Western cultures has changes the moral values of my people. When I see children no longer giving up their seats for adults on the bus and showing no respect for their elders, it make me sad. No wonder we having all the problems we are having in the world today.
God destroyed an entire city because of Gay and Lesbian behavior and sadly enough he cannot be happy with this world today.
Jamaica has the highest case of AIDS!!!!!
Have you ever wondered why?
I feel no pity for any gay speaking out for rights!!
Yes, I agree you are human and I dont agree in anyone wanting to kill gays. However, you are exactly where you should have stay all along "in Hiding".
When you make choices like this you should keep it where it belongs, "in the closet".
Why done you leave jamaica and go live where it is accepted like USA or England.
I am proud of the police force for standing up for wwhat is right and just in God's sight and upholding the belief of our beautiful country jamaica. Way to go!!!!!!!

"Being GAy is a choice"
you have no evidence of that.
"why should others be forced to accept your choice?"
going with the idea that it is a choice, why should you be jailed or killed for something so trivial.
"when I look on line and see all the young men showing off their nakedness on line"
what websites are you on? btw, men, women, black, white, gay, straight, young, old, they're all naked on the internet.
"Jamaica has the highest case of AIDS!!!!!
Have you ever wondered why?"well since there is not a large gay community in jamaica it must be because of the straight people. have you listened to the reggae and dancehall coming out of ja in the last few years? it's all about sex. but i don't see you speaking out against them.
"I feel no pity for any gay speaking out for rights!!"

More Jamaicans need to practice "ONE LOVE". Regardless of our sexuality the country is big enough for all. I've had the wonderful opportunity of making friends with some gays. They are people too and deserve the same opportunities as anyone else.

Because our silence has not protected us.
Instead, our silence has contributed to an environment where gay and straight people alike are bullied from the cradle to the grave for not being "man enough," for being "dykes" or "fags" or whatever cruelty the insecure people around them call out to belittle them on any given day.
Many of us know from experience that when you let bullies go unchecked their assaults simply become more outrageous. But when you stand up to a bully, and sometimes, when you even show kindness, bullies, do what? They shrink back down to size.
Personally, I have no need to out myself. I just am. If you know me, you know my work, you know my partner. And it is what it is. I'm here to do God's will.
My focus is supporting healthy, loving people who want to make positive contributions to their communities. Sexual orientation and gender identity are inconsequential to me.

P.S. People who believe that being gay is a choice are delusional. No sane person would choose the type of cruelty that gay people endure. Particularly gay youth. Most of the gay adults whom I know tried to kill themselves as children because they feared persecution. What child would choose that for him or herself?
None. The will to survive is too strong. The desire to be honest and free in who we are, just as strong.

Sexual orientation is about how people are wired, who they are attracted to - whether you are a man who is interested in men or a man who is interested in women.
For those of you who have partnered for a long time, you know that sex is only a small (but important) component in a relationship.
The true purpose of partnership is to become the person God sent you to be and your partner is supposed to support you being and doing your best.
That said, it is small-minded and immature to reduce sexual orientation to mere sex acts. It is childish and cruel to call people names - whether you like them or not.
In short, some of you really need to grow up and get real about the contributions that gay people have made to your lives. I'm talking about your "aunties" who raised all the throw-away kids in the family, your uncle who never married and never misses a Sunday checking on your grandmother.
Your bigotry hurts your own family members and threatens the stability of your loved ones.

I appreciate that he's so fierce about who he is as a person and what he stands for. I like his values and the ownership he's taken in the future of his homeland.
What many pieces about homophobia in Jamaica fail to address is Jamaicans' perception that homophobia and pedophilia are synonymous.
Historically, American and European men (and some women too) have taken sexcapades to "exotic" places like Jamaica, Thailand, Mexico, etc. where their intent is to have sex with underage girls AND boys, and to escape prosecution.
The latter has caused Jamaicans to believe that being gay is a "white man's disease," when in fact it's biologically pre-determined.
To date, Tony-award winning poet/playwright Staceyann Chin is the only out Jamaican. She lives in NY and after appearing on Oprah's "Gays around the World" last year, even she had to go into hiding for a while because she received numerous death threats.

In your post you say,
"You can't fault a person for what society engrains in them from birth.", and I disagree. Each one of us is responsible for what we accept as truth and reality not society. I can condition and train you to be a person who hates people who;s name is Cinthia, but that doesn't mean you have to accept this within your mind, your heart, and your soul.
We can no longer blame society for the evils and perils of the world- after all who is society but you and I!
If anyone thinks gay peopel are the problem, I think we should look deep in the mirror to see where the problem really lies.
I believe I am the ultimate authority on what thougths I should think and beliefs I should hold. Not the bible or man of anykind. It's my job to enlighten and develop my mind body and spitt.
When we make it the church's fault or the governemetn's fault or our family's/friend's fault we are saying I don't have the power over my own thoughts. We give our power to these institutions and that is our fault for for acting out out fear.
Listen to the God within and you'll find it would not tell any of us to kill another. If it did then it would not be God.

As a jamaican i find it a travasty that in these times -- JAMAICA and its people are continuing the barbaric, dense, idiotic and non sensical behaviors/attitudes toward their own mankind.
We all world need to be more tolerant of each others personal preference. As long as the person is not forcing their lifestyles on you let them be. The sad part about it is that all these SUPPOSEDLY homophobes come to the US and they are the same ones indulging in this lifestyle and behavior they so much despise in Jamaica. GROW THE HELL UP!!!!
I feel that Jamaica and its people need to read more and develop a better understanding of others so that we can all work towards a better world.

Excellent video! Some humans still think they have a say over nature. The gay cop is wonderful.

Ever since I could remember it has been taught that being gay is wrong through music and the church. My family is Jamaican and I have gay family member that only came out since living in Canada. Being gay is a sin but so is sex before marriage, so whoever hasn't sinned go ahead and judge. I can't hate someone b/c of their choice to be gay, but I still think I have to choice to not accept it as okay because its not ...just as I don't promote teenage pregnancy. Almost every tv show has a gay character and I don't think my child should be exposed to that lifestyle until I think he is ready, but our society thinks they have that right. It appears to be the people who are gay crave special attention and I don't see why. If you're gay be gay and proud, it you're straight be straight and proud.

Very bold and important story. Congratulations on a great piece: very sensitive and powerfully told. It will definitely appeal beyond the Jamaican borders.

It is unfortunate that he has to face these in-differences but hopefully his example will encourage others in Jamaica to speak up.

Great interview. More local people telling it like it is and getting it out there, without the spin.
I'm Jamaican and it is unfortunate my countrymen can't express their disagreement, disgust and displeasure without the violence and crassness.
All our Caribbean islands need less condemnation and more tolerance.

Holding people accountable for their bigotry is exactly what must be done. The root of hate is irrelevant, whose "fault" it is is irrelevant. Everyone has to take part in erasing hate.

If I grew up in the middle east chances are I would've grown up as a muslim. My society has its roots embedded in Christianity that teaches that homosexuality is against God & nature. You can't fault a person for what society engrains in them from birth. Funny enough though this same Christianity teaches that we are to love EVERYONE without partiality. He that is without sin...
