The Mosuo people are commonly described as a matriarchal society. They practise two religions - Daba, based on animistic principles and worship of a mother goddess and Tibetan Buddhism. Crucially women take a leading role in the family, property and family lineage passes through the female side and they practise a 'walking marriage' after puberty, whereby women can choose and change sexual partners as they wish and couples do not live together or get married, with men only coming to the village at night if invited. This pod will look at the aspirations of a young Mosuo couple in their twenties, their beliefs and how they see their own future panning out as modernisation and tourism have started to creep into the spiritual lives and tarnish the community.

Interesting.
But it isn't as matriarchal as it would've been prescribed.
These people have a different definition of marriage than other cultures; marriage in which marriage allows women to have sexual relations to men without being tied down by a committed relationship.That isn't matriarchal, that's free love.
