Ex-Gangster Activists

As of June 2008, San Francisco City Attorney, Dennis Herrera, has installed 3 injunctions in the neighborhoods of Bayview, Fillmore and Mission, all predominantly people of color districts.
In the Mission district, San Francisco's largest Hispanic neighborhood, ex-gang members are organizing at a grassroots level to combat the root causes of gang membership while also organizing against the injunction. They complain that the injunction criminalizes youth, legalizes racial profiling, and does little to address the root causes of gang membership. The City Attorney has remained an aloof figure to them and an easy target of their anger and disappointment with the city.

Travis,
This pod is an excellent example of telling a story from a marginalized community. It's also great because it demonstrates the role journalists and new media makers (us podsters, if you will) can play in promoting and prompting social justice and action. Good shit, G.
If you have a chance, check out my most recent upload on a former gangster from Orange County who is trying to scare the life into people. I'd apprecaite a vote and a comment.
Also check my pod, Virgin of East L A, as it highlights a community similar to the Castro.
