Grandad Says Get Busy

rebeccale
Filmmaker Rebecca Lloyd-Evans is sick and tired of feeling dissatisfied and can't help but think it's all about the overwhelming choice twenty-somethings have - from career and love to travel opportunities, we're told everything is available to us and that we should always strive to have the best. Wanting to know if this is a condition of her age or the age we live in, she meets people who are not so much in their quarter-life crisis but in their three quarter-life crisis to see what life was like for them when they were the same age as her, 26, and see if their responses can't yield some answers that'll put her mind - and heart - at rest...

    • at 21, i think iv changed my idea of what i want to do for a career at least 2 maybe 3 times that so far in the past ten years, i think, in a way, i would prefer it to be like it was way be when, you didn't have much of a choice, and it all roled out with luck rather than everyone's expectations being that you have to go to university and get a high paided job!

loved this, its so true, and really well set and mixed.

dmurdock - i know what you mean, even with relationships; in the past I've been *this* close to getting my mother to arrange a marriage for me... then I remember that she chose my dad and think better of it ;-)

    • This is a great video. Old people sometimes think that they had it hard and we have it easy because 'these days we have any opportunities'. But it's as naive to think that 'anyone can do a Bill Gates' as it is to think 'anyone can do a JD Rockerfeller'. Every population competes with each other, and with competition comes success and failure, and stress.
So i think life has always been equally hard since neanderthal times.
As this video says though, the older generation did seem to have lower expectations, and i expect that ensured they were generally less disappointed and therefore happier.

    • I think we all have these problems. I'm 26 too I can definitely relate. I thank God I even have a job right now. I think I might hang in there for a while and work on being a designer. I really appreciate the pod.

    • Very good video and very true. I have similar problems, jumping from one idea to another and ending up at nothing. Thanks for the video it helped me. :)

    • Great video. Thank you for posting this. I'm 30, and currently in the midst of a quarter (or one-third?) life crisis. This post helped reassure me that I'm not the only one out there who is going through this. I have a degree, dreams, love in my life, yet no idea what what I'm supposed to be doing to make myself happy. But the advice of the elderly gentleman in your video really rang true... just get out there and do SOMETHING.

    • I have such an appreciation for the voice of elders.

While it is true that young people today have so much more opportunities available to them, what's missing is support. Too many times they are often coached into pursuing a career out of pier pressure and not encouraged to pursue their passions.

Young people do know what they want; what they need is support.

    • "Get busy, get focused." This is a great pod and I like Rebecca's point of view. Personally, it's seems that this generation does have so many option and in a way that might hinder the focus. In a way things were simpler in the olden days, our generation had to grapple with so many different situations and options available at-hand and that gives us a disadvantage.

      Great pod, again!
