In a special Valentine's Day edition, Vanguard asks, "What's the true price
of love?" We're bringing you two very unromantic stories of two of the
great symbols of the holiday. First, Vanguard correspondent Kaj Larsen
heads to Colombia to look at the thorny side of the rose business. And for
the second act, Mariana van Zeller travels to Sierra Leone to see if the
diamonds that fueled the country's bloody civil war can now help it recover.

***Check out the premiere of "Blood Roses and Deadly Diamonds" on Wednesday,
Feb. 11 at 10 p.m. on Current TV. And join Mariana for a live chat during
the premiere by visiting http://current.com/vanguard***

    • 50 bucks?? I don't think so. Try 12-15 at the most! haha i wouldn't buy them at all cause its just like throwing that money in the garbage after a week, but stupid holidays exist that force the masses to consume...

I think I'll buy her a houseplant instead.

The going rate in Tucson,Az at chain grocery stores Fry's, Safeway, and Basha's is $17.77 for one dozen roses arranged with baby's breath and a piece of green paper wrapped around it. A local florist SavOn flowers sells a dozen roses arranged in a clear glass vase for $74.99 the florist's arrangements are much more artfully done. so let's see we have to pay for growing the roses, nutrients, water, labor we have to pay for the workers at the rose factory, the transportation in refrigerated trucks across international borders(tarifs/import taxes) and then the retailer needs to make profit too I guess these things add up.
