KAPOW! The New Comic Book Heroines

Friends of Lulu is a national nonprofit organization whose purpose is to promote and encourage female readership and participation in the comic book industry. We visit the 2008 Friends of Lulu awards in New York, NY, and meet the organization's president, Valerie D'Orazio, who's blog "Occasional Superheroine" has been a long-time champion of de-marginalizing women in the comic industry. We also meet first-time graphic novelist Jennifer Crute as she endeavors to get her first book published.

    • YO MA! YOU DREW DAT?! l love that soo much. I find that women artistist are so underated, I find that there is far more variation in styles and content than is found with male artists. AS a male artist I find my self jealous of the freedom in wich a female artist can create with.

    • This is awesome!

I'm glad Current ran this short on television. I'm a SVA Illustration BFA Grad of '07 and there wasn't much black women in SVA especially in the Cartooning/Illustration dept. I don't have the actual statistics but I can say I was the only black female in Illustration graduating class. So seeing another black woman with the same degree and the same goals in life I almost yelled " HOLY #@?!" aloud in front of my family living room. Yeah I was totally livid!

Anyway, there's a glass sealing for women in any indrustry especially for women of color,

We gotta deal with sexist, racist, and the usual idiots lol. :)

    • That's a great intiative. As far as I know women read comics in countries such as Japan.
You're kind of a talented woman, Jennifer !

    • I think this is great and it opened my eyes into a topic I knew very little of even though I highly enjoy graphic novels. Thanks for posting because now I will definitely be looking into this.

    • Nevertheless the purpose of encouraging and promoting female readership and participation is a great idea. Props!
If there is still prejudice in the industry after the numbers of participation increase then we have ourselves a problem.

    • I think part of the reason that the cartooning industry has the reputation of being a male dominated industry is because it IS. I don't think society puts in an effort to separate women cartoonists from their male counterparts. In fact, by drawing attention to an exclusively female cartoonist organization you are only furthering the separation. Feminism has this awful tendency to actually promote sexism.
Its a matter of numbers, if more women enter cartooning, more of them will be likely to do things deserving of credit and then they will receive more credit. You can't expect women cartoonists as a group to be treated equally as a group of male cartoonists because there IS a difference: numbers.
Also, are we not suppose to recognize any differences between male and female perspective? Am i not supposed to appreciate the specific perspective of Jennifer Crute as a woman?
This is a matter (like many matters concerning diversity) that is very complicated and cannot be attributed solely to prejudice or some kind of social injustice.

I have always believed that a good story told well will always attract an audience no matter what the sex of the storyteller may be. It is only when the industry gets involved in the distribution of the tale, dose the shit stick of prejudice become destroyer of talent.
