Can Pills Make Me Smarter?

Drugs like Adderall & Modafinil are used to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) & Narcolepsy respectively; but such drugs are now being recognised as possible 'cognitive enhancers' for those of us who aren't prescribed them. With this availability, 'smart pills' have become widely used among students and academics at college campuses in the United States.
In this pod, Steve goes out to find out first hand if Modafinil is for him. Along the way he'll meet an expert in Neuropsychology to weigh in on the potentially damaging side effects of misusing cognitive enhancers, meet users stateside, question the ethics of enhancing your brain and see whether pills can actually make you smarter.

Scary. I once was given a pill to help me finish an important project on the night before deadline. It was my last major project in college. I hadn't had any ideas until that very last minute and was very tired. I visited my pharmacist and was given a pill. No charge, only a promise that I'd not take it if at all possible.
I did take it.
I finished the project and scored well in it. Upon celebration later the next day I had only gotten two sips into a pint of Guinness when I crashed. I woke up at home about 12 hours later feeling extremely hungry. My friends carried me home.
Never again.
I have no idea what the pill was. But it helped me enormously.

Really good article. I have been using "smart drugs" for some time now and they are really starting to get popular in the office. One that was recommended to me and I take daily is Cogniku - www.cogniku.com. The science behind it is quite interesting and it definitely makes me more alert and in the zone during the day.

Nice pod. I think this will start to be a bigger issue in the future. But personally i think it should have been done with adderall; only because it seems to be the most popular around here (Seattle).

SERO:
Cheers SERO. You're right, Adderall would have been a better choice, but unfortunately its a class 2 controlled substance here in UK (amphetamine based) and we didn't fancy getting in trouble with the fuzz.
It's definitely becoming a bigger problem over here, check out this article related to the film. http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/features/are-smart-d... - 2 years ago
