I would NOT want to be in this house during a lightning storm. I didn't hear them mention anything about flame-resistance.

KristiK:
Straw Bale houses are extremely fire resistant, much more so than a typical wooden house. The straw is packed so tight that oxygen can't get in plus the finish coat, usually clay, lime or cement, prevents the access of flame. They are also much more resistant to earthquake damage because they flex. In fact straw is overall a superior building material because it can be sourced locally, requiring minimum embedded energy due to transportation and processing. It also is extremely energy efficient. I would say that NOT building with straw is the "strange" choice rather than the other way around.
