Urban Travel

How do you get where you're going? There are so many websites dedicated to providing detailed directions for traveling via mass transit: Hopstop.com, google transit, publicroutes.com, trips123.com, just to name a few. Not to mention a good, old-fashioned map. But which ones will actually help you find your way?

We put these websites to the test by sending three intrepid New Yorkers on an urban scavenger hunt, each using a routes suggested by one of these mapping methods. See who makes it first.

Part of our SCION sponsored presentation: 'Urban Mobility- Rethinking Transportation in an Urban Environment'.

    • How is it fair to compare HopStop on the iPhone to Google Maps on paper? Why not use both on the iPhone? Once you find the route, Google Maps works underground as well... That would have been the best choice once over ground as well, due to the GPS capabilities! I would like to reproduce this with me as one of the people using both Google Maps + ExitStrategyNYC for the iPhone... I bet I'll win!

    • I think I'll stick to plan before I travel. For London in England (where I live), I use the Transport for London website for planning routes and to check for disruptions.
