The only public transportation option in Milwaukee is the city bus. They are loud, smelly, and hardly ever on time. Sometimes I would waiting the freezing cold to take the bus to class, only to watch it blow right past the stop where I was waiting. Then I'd have to walk all the way to campus and hope I'd be only fifteen minutes late.
Once, I took the city bus to an area of town I had not been to before, and asked the driver to call out the stop that I needed. He said he would. I then stood right behind the yellow line, as close to him as I could, as a reminder that I was there. Not only did he forget, he didn't realize it until three miles later... and I had to walk through a foreign neighborhood to make up the difference. I missed my connecting bus that ran only once every hour and was very late (That was when I was new to the city... I am well-versed in the area now).
Plenty of buses run through the downtown and campus area, but outlying areas have very little connection to other parts of the city. At least the subway in Boston goes through the different boroughs; those who live in Greenfield, Brookfield, West Allis, and Bayview have almost no connection to one another.
The MCTS (Milwaukee County Transit System) is better than nothing, but that's the only positive thing I have to say about it. They are poorly managed and have almost zero funding. Prices go up every year, but the service seems to just get worse. People are beaten and assaulted on the bus (drivers too, not just passengers) and it makes the news on a regular basis. The mayor is pulling for an electric rail system, but the proposed plan would not reach large groups of people in the city (Miller Park, the airport, UW-Milwaukee, Marquette University, etc.) so it seems pointless.

I feel fine about bus and tube system in London, even handy with the popular e-ticket scheme (also known as "oyster"), handy for topping up for travelling around, and minus the paper they used.
