The infamous 18 are El Salvador's biggest gang. They battle with the rival MS13 for control of the drugs market. They charge 'renta' to local businesses and kill those who don't pay. They are teenagers, the orphans of civil war, born out of battle and unfazed by death. As we enter the desperate, death-defying world of the 18, we begin to see the political ingredients of one of the fastest developing gangs in the world.

    • I realize that this documentary is based on gangs in El Salvador I just wish that it would highlight that the ENTIRE country is NOT riddled with gang members. There are only certain neighborhoods- generally the underdeveloped- that are taken over by these thugs. Not all of these gang members are poverty striken....many have a parent or parents working hard in the U.S. (and other parts of the world) sending back plenty of money to keep them well fed, clothed, and with a roof over their heads. Their lifestyle is a path they have chosen and not to represent our entire country.

El Salvador is a small country with a lot of pride, culture, education, and warmth. The majority of its' people have held their heads high through decades of Civil War, earthquakes, and the post-war era and we are proud to say we are "Salvadoreños". We work hard to make something of ourselves.

I will not allow "las maras" to be the model of who WE really are. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1KGBQ_dLq0

    • Excellent shooting and editing, well done all around . A very raw and in depth look at the scumbags who murdered my sister in cold blood. I think people like these fail to recognize that when you murder someone you dont hurt the person being killed at all, you hurt the tons of people around the person more than anything. . .

    • This documentary makes me feel lucky to live in the UK although shades of this sad situation are already present here and could I fear could develop into the full blown nightmare portrayed here. Recommended viewing for any male teenager. The lure of the absent family/community is not appreciated enough. Add poverty and you have a potent mix.

This documentary is one example of great independent production equal to anything I have seen elsewhere eg bbc. Also recommended viewing: 'feltham sings' on youtube.
