Heart-shaped watermelons

The unusual fruit is the invention of Hiroichi Kimura, a farmer from Kumamoto, and his wife. The couple said they had tried for three years to create the perfectly heart-shaped fruit, which they say symbolizes their passion for farming and their affection for each other.
Apparently they are being sold for a price 15,750 yen ($160) each.

Costs too much, I'd rather buy a regular watermelon and cut slices then use a heart shaped cookie cutter if I want to eat something cute...

Their culture really DOES seem to hold "cuteness" in a certain reverence, doesn't it. Sometimes it CAN become a BIT cloying...but it can also be a lot of FUN!!! I want one, too...uh...for my WIFE, of course... I was kind of wondering how to keep it preserved, though. In my experience even the CUTEST watermelon is not quite so cute after it has sat around in the refrigerator for a couple of weeks. Can they be LAMINATED or something, I wonder...?

Growing watermelons in molds is not new. thinking you can get 160$ for one is though. They're probably more or less inedible by the way. growing them in forms like that usually makes the skin thick.

I was just going to comment that it looks oddly more delicious than a regular watermelon

Haha, awesome.
I wonder if the people who buy them would feel bad about eating them. I definitely would. It's so cute. :P - 2 years ago

Kinda Steep IMHO. Then again your paying for it's unique shape rather then size.

The $160 isn't horrible considering that's one large watermelon heart

It's not considered a horrible price. In japan, a shaped watermelon is given as a gift of gratitude toward someone. They buy it because it is expensive and unique to show how much gratitude they have. Besides they are expensive because they are grown in glass containers.
