My mother is a 1st generation Italian American. Her having immigrants as parents I think is one main difference between my Mothers relationship with her parents and my relationship with mine. She encountered a lot of hurdles having non-english speaking parents, and parents that came from a different cultural background.
Her parents has much different expectations of her than mine do of me. Her parents expected her to get married early in life, where as mine want me to focus on education. Her parents wanted her to focus on providing financially for a family, where as mine are concerned more with self fulfillment and overall happiness.
Because of these differences in expectations, I think my parents were forced to mature a lot more quickly than I. When my parents were my age they were already married, owned a home and on their way to having their first child. They shared a joint checking account through high school and it was considered normal to do so. Today, something like that would be considered very abnormal.
