Brutalist Architecture; getting beyond the love of concrete

Recently I have found myself photographing a lot of what is known as Brutalist Architecture. My gut instinct is to inform the entire world that I personally detest buildings designed in this manner. As do most non-architects. The reasons are many and need not be revisited here, however, I must confess. Despite its many lackings, Brutalist design does make for some pretty fantastic photographic material. Perhaps that’s because there are rarely people in the way…

…but is there more to value in Brutalist design? Besides the sexy abstract aesthetics, and the embodied energy of material?
