Blood in the Streets- Rising Youth Violence

Crime in the United States has slowed since the nineties, but a disturbing trend is taking place as waves of violence are increasing across many American cities. While presidential candidates focus on foreign wars, many neighborhoods have themselves turned into war zones. According to the first ever American Human Development Report released last month, premature death by homicide is more than five times higher in the U.S. than the international average. Just four miles from the Capitol, DC's Trinidad neighborhood has seen many of its young people die this summer. As the economy slides and opportunities decrease for America's at-risk young we can only hope this is not the beginning of another national crisis.

    • Great piece!...Far too often the insurmountable impact that lack of education and employment opportunities has on our youth is ignored. We clearly see the effects of that in your broadcast.

    • No matter what people say it doesn't come from lack of fathers yes it is a factor but the bare root of the the problem is hopelessness. Fathers run from families because of fear of financial failure. urban communities are targets for development but the citizen of the communities can find work or share part in the "progress".

    • They used to have work placement programs, untill they found out they make more money by keeping people going through the revolving door of our prisons.

    • The goverment needs to create a program that gives jobs to people who have gotten out prison. And also stop making prison look so apealing to the young adults of america especially African Americans.
