Georgia launched a major military offensive Friday to retake the breakaway province of South Ossetia, prompting Moscow to send tanks into the region in a furious response that threatens to engulf Georgia, a staunch U.S. ally, and Russia in all-out war.

Hundreds were reported dead in the worst outbreak of hostilities since the province won defacto independence in a war against Georgia that ended in 1992. Witnesses said the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali was devastated.

"I saw bodies lying on the streets, around ruined buildings, in cars," said Lyudmila Ostayeva, 50, who had fled with her family to Dzhava, a village near the border with Russia. "It's impossible to count them now. There is hardly a single building left undamaged."

More at the link...breaking was the planes being shot down and more breaking is that Russia is moving in on their capital within a couple of hours to take it over...

Why can't people talk first? Whats in it for the take over?

    • I wonder what Georgian olympic athletes think about this. While they're in China representing their country, that same country is being destroyed by Russia. Such a shame.

    • It is seemingly an excepted response to blow things up if one government doesn't agree with another. At one time our government would the effort to bring nations to the table. Apparently, we have lost that perogative for the time being. Focus and vote.

I have conversations with an old retired CIA pilot who predicted a strong Russian-Iran coalition because Russia/Iran would not respond lightly to the Bush administrations Irag/Iran border securement and the Obama promise to increase troops to stabilize Afghanistan--both actions squeezing Iran as if playing the board game RISK...

The talk about new missile early detection systems located closer to Russia always makes the Russian government extremely nervous...Damn, the pilot predicted "some action such as this" as a bartering chip about eight months ago...

Oh man, this is not good--perfect political timing to raise hell.

This is why I go drinking on Friday afternoons...This pilot has told me a lot of "crazy, yet plausible things", unfortunately, I am still waiting for some to come true...later

Incidentally, the seemingly "Out of the Blue" tough talk from the Obama camp regarding Afghanistan, what is your spin on that? This pilot told me the CIA is working through the man as we speak...You think that is possible? Make that a double!

    • From article...
"Georgia has about 2,000 troops in Iraq, making it the third-largest contributor to coalition forces after the U.S. and Britain."
That, alone, is more than enough reason to keep an eye on how this unfolds.
