Vatican warns of growing "Christianophobia"

Archbishop Dominique Mamberti, the Vatican's foreign minister, spoke in the wake of attacks against Christians in India that have left at least 13 people dead this week.
Mamberti, addressing a conference in northern Italy, said religious freedom was a vital part of international relations and human dignity.
"In order to promote this dignity in an integral way, so-called 'Christianophobia' should be combated as decisively as 'Islamophobia' and anti-Semitism," he said.
This week in eastern India, thousands of people, most of them Christians, have sought shelter in makeshift government camps, driven from their homes by religious violence.
Hindu mobs burnt more than a dozen churches and attacked Christians after a Hindu leader was killed.
Mamberti said the events in India made the issue of religious liberty today all the more pressing.
While Hindu groups accuse Christian priests of bribing poor tribes and low-caste Hindus to change their faith, the Christians say lower-caste Hindus convert willingly to escape a complex caste system.
Pope Benedict has condemned the violence against Christians in Orissa but also deplored the killing of the Hindu leader.
Italy's foreign ministry said it would summon India's ambassador to demand "incisive action" to prevent further attacks against Christians.
Mamberti said 21 Catholic missionaries were killed in the world in 2007 and lamented that the Christian population of Iraq was now down to about 500,000 from about one million before the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
Last month, Pope Benedict told Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki that minority Christians in Iraq needed more protection.
The Archbishop of Mosul of Iraq's largest Christian denomination, the Chaldean Catholics, was kidnapped in February and found dead two weeks later.
The Vatican has often expressed concern that conflicts in the Middle East are greatly diminishing the Christian population in the areas of the religion's birth.

It appears the vast majority of people don't actually read the story.
The issue was genocide. The annual culling of over 250,000 HUMANS a year. Billions in the last 100 years.

wow. quite a number of responses. most of us are not religious, but it still affects us. i dont think christian-o-phobia is the right word. i think all that high and mighty preaching followed by our children being molested, our money taken from us, our families not talking to us, our churches lying to us- when really they are a multi billion dollar corporation- is what we fear. we cant stand the lies and we dont like being told what to do. so sell your bs to someone who cares.

Whatever your take on religion, I feel like the latest out of the Vatican is something that everyone should be able to agree on. Hate and/or violence against any group - fill in the blank, be it a religion, a sex, a sexual preference - should all be fought against with equal vigor. That's not saying I believe or endorse Christianity...it's saying violence is something to avoid in every way, always.

The problems described about the caste system as it is today is not so much due to religion as the effect colonialism, when the Brits imposed a further class system on the caste system in an attempt to understand it, thus making the divisions far wider. Too much is made into religious issues when they shouldn't be and *that* is the danger.

To say the least, I was shocked by much of the above posting. I want to share something that might help understand what is going on.
http://current.com/items/89253879_vatican_warns_of_growing_christianophobia#addR...
Nettle asked a simple question. I am no religious fanatic, but when I learned of the Christians in Sudan being systematically murdered in 1999 (it had been going on for a while even then, I cried...) I presented under his post an example of one Islamic country. Just ONE. Please read. Then continue here.
In this century more Christians have died for their faith than in the other nearly 2k years combined. Let that sink in.
First of all. These people were only Jesus Freaks in the light that they died for their faith. Most did not own a bible, although that is a cherished and protected item that some, not many house churches have access to. They often share bibles among many. In most of the countries owning a Bible is punishable by death or indefinite imprisonment.
Now think about that for one moment. Death for owning a Bible. We cannot comprehend that here in the United States. This is common especially under "Islamic States" where Islam is the mandatory religion. And is also common in communist and we are seeing other governments doing the same.
These people lived in fear and knowing that death is often the consequence of believing in God and Jesus.
Did they go around making condescending comments? Hell no . Did they quietly worship in secret? Yes.
So before the politically correct brainwashes and blinds you to the plight of even Christians around the world...
Below are examples of stuff that happened THIS WEEK.

Hey if it does, you probably wouldn't be against buying a Christian slave in Sudan. They are selling women and children for about $15 a person, sometimes less. They don't sell adult males, those are slain in front of their families.
More christians have been slain, imprisoned and enslaved this century than in the 2000 years before. Should we all assume that you think genocide is cool too?Or are you living in ignorant bliss on the world situation?

In Pope Benedict's time this amount of human life was significant, and remember he actually saw the holocost, so no doubt this is haunting to see the genocide of billions of anyone of any faith.
In Iran .. from 02 to present...500,000 Christians slaughtered for breaking the law of not converting to Islam or the other way around, being Islamic and converting to being Christian.

Has anyone seen the documentary on what some priest and preechers are doing in India and how they are converting or trying to convert the Hindus
The techiques they are using are just discusting and low
These people are pissing on Christianity, so I am not suprised by this news. For example: They put bunch of Hindu kids on a school bus, then they turn the bus off after few minutes of driving, tell the kids that the bus broke down, then tell the kids to pray to their god and ask their god to make the bus start again, kids do, bus doesnt turn on, then they tell kids to pray to Jesus, then out of no where the bus turns on
This method they are trying to use is so low, its making all Christianity look like shit, these few people, who are getting rich by it because they get money for every person they convert.Real Christians need to wake up and call out these people that are doing this.

The pendulum always swings back.
More people have died over religion (disguised as racism, ethnic cleansing and moral supremacy) than anything else in the world. People seem to have forgotten about the Crusades (Christianity/Islam/Judaism/Hellenism), or the Holocaust (Christians/Jews), the Spanish Inquisition (Christianity/Indigenous Mesoamerican beliefs), the Armenian Genocide (Islam/Christianity), wars between Israel and half of the Middle East or countless other massacres in the name of faith and power.I am saddened by the deaths, but know that until personal spirituality replaces religious zealotry, this will continue.

Ok.. so does that mean that it's all cool for the continued genocide world wide? Current rate of a christian slave in Sudan less than $15. It's documented that more than 250,000 Christians a year, are still being murdered.
Cool because they will eventually all die?
lovely.
Problem solved when all the Christians are dead in Islamic, communist and all other countries world wide that are purging them.
Of course, America is trying to stamp out Christianity also, but it's not physical death, it's not politically correct.
According to that theory, only thing that will swing the pendulum back is God. Plagues, famine... flood? Tsunami, Hurricanes, Earthquakes..

In ancient Japan (maybe not ancient, but I don't remember the era), Christianity started gaining popularity. The government who was in control at the time followed Shinto (traditional Japanese religion) and decided to stomp out Christianity by persecuting all of it's followers.
It wasn't hatred against the religion itself, but it was a threat to their position of power, so they got rid of it.
Does anyone know if this incident is anything like that one?

Nettle:
yes. Nettle.
Actually in the last century there have been more Christians slaughtered than any time in the past history combined to date. Why doesn't the press pick this up? Well, it's not politically correct, to report against any major religion. Also the price of getting this information out by any news media is too high. It has been through many other sources that information has been gained. And all report the same findings. It isn't propaganda, as some here might think because for us it's unfathomable.
This website keeps a country by country policy on what happens to Christians or Muslims that convert to Christianity
I'll give you the example of Sudan, only because I gave a presentation on this exact problem, and I am not a religious fanatic. Don't walk around with a bible in toe. Maybe I should... But I don't. I am just a regular girl. I saw something that made me cry and I researched it extensively and gave a presentation about it.
I have one personal philosophy in life.. Actions are louder than words. If people realize I am different and want to know why... I sometimes say I pray a lot. But I don't take it further unless pressed.
Anyhow...
When I gave the lecture in 1999 It was not against the law for any Muslim to kill a christian in Sudan. Let that sit in your mind a second. It was perfectly legal in this Islamic country for people of Islam to murder Christians. period.Christian churches were (and are) not aloud to be built nor maintained and were destroyed systematically, including people's homes that were used as churches.
For anyone that did not renounce their Christian religion and become Islamic immediately... (this was in a Christian community way up in the mountains that they actually found Christian families - at one time 25% of the country was of the Christian faith, now after the systematic slaughter there are no statistics on this, they will not take a census.) this was a typical fate:
At that time, christian men were slaughtered in front of their families and the women often raped, and many at a very young age. They were sold into slavery along with their children.
Houses and neighborhoods burnt to the ground.I saw reports of Americans going into Sudan and buying Christian slaves (posed as Muslims) for approx $15 per slave. I believe Voice of the Myarters reported much of this, but many sources, Christian and secular from Free countries helped in this action.
A small percentage of the slaves were set free. Were these Jesus freaks? Well, they died for their religion, but no they were not fanatical or obnoxious with it like people here are talking about.
Many didn't own a bible even. Most worshiped in small groups in houses. Owning a bible that would be considered most precious by the Christian house churches was punishable by death without question.
Did they go around saying "oh you must be sad you aren't a christian?" Hell no. They were living in the faith of their God under the threat of death, and for an Islamic person to kill a Christian, it was not a crime in Islamic law, in 1999.

(cont, sorry long)
Here is the progress made to date:
Sorry it's copyrighted, so go to the link above. For convenience I can try to summarize the information and add it here. But you can find this in any number of pages about persecution.
Due to actions taken by world governments, life has gotten better "technically" although there are still flourishing reports of Christian Persecution through out the Islamic state.
In the north conversion to Christian is punishable by death, and the Christians are still being killed by the Muslims in the south, they are supplied with weapons by the government. The official government policy is that there is religious freedom, but the state religion is Islam and policy is that all must convert to Islam. To us that doesn't make sense, but to them I have a feeling they are distinguishing between Sunni (65% of the population) and (at least 69 percent of the Sunni are black Africans and call themselves Arab to lead a life with acceptance in the Arab country.) It is unknown what percentage is non-Muslim at this time under the "freedom of religion". I think that term is between sects (major 2) of those under Muslim religion, in this Muslim state.
New Non-Muslim, specifically churches are not aloud to be built, and old ones not aloud to be maintained or fixed and most if not all have been destroyed by Muslim forces.
All sounds like it's getting better, but inside sources say it has not changed very much.
This is one example of one country. There are hundreds more where Christians are being Persecuted.
I will post some news that has happened in the last week below in a fresh post.
Thanks.

I swear this website is killing my faith in humanity.
Please people before you justify of murder of a group of people you should at least have the decency to THINK about the issue at hand.
You know something tells me these murdered Indians probably didn’t have much to do with all the atrocities committed by the catholic church. I know it sounds crazy and all but stop and think about it for a second.
How many times have you heard of an Indian, Christian crusader committing crimes sanctioned by the church? Seriously how many brown people do you think would get away with killing white people in the name of god? Last time I checked it went the other way around, or use to for that matter.
I bet most of the people who are condoning this sort of thing are much more likely to be related to someone who has persecuted in the name of Christianity then those poor Indians who lost their lives.Sweet jesus I could go on and on about how ironic this thread is but I fear I’ve already lost most of you.. But who cares. the issue at hand is that someone is telling us about the genocide of Christians world wide.
The going rate of a christian slave in sudan is $15 or less.
The current rate of genocide of Christians purely due to their faith... about 250,000.
Probably higher.
Did you see that in Iran alone between 03 to 08 over 500,000 Christians were executed by the Muslim government, and that is not a crime to kill a Christian.Anyone else upset about genocide?

i realize that and offered no justification for their murder because there simply is not one. I was instead clarifying the seemingly offtopic remarks that others had made in this thread.
comparable to hitler or stalin? for what? panamacanalzone said "I think either you believe in fundamental human rights or you don't. If you don't, you are no different from Hitler, Stalin..."
the key words being NO DIFFERENT.
I respectfully disagree. You have it correct through, ricky, in saying that people are IN SOME WAYS comparable if they are prejudice. My issue was in panamacanalzone making a bare generalization and that was all.

You actually understood what was being discussed, and yes, it's a genocide and it's an atrocity.
Most people here can't see beyond their own mind to comprehend or see something that doesn't touch their lives directly. they also didn't understand what was being discussed.

Most of your comments are about Western Christianity. The phobia found elsewhere is alot more serious, where people fear the intentions of Christians to the point that they are willing to kill them and expel them from the land.

The true ideology of Islam, Christianity, and judaism is not suppose to be dangerous, but every one of these religions at some point in history has used violence against those who don't believe the way they do. There are peaceful and non-peaceful people found within every type of demographic.

What is being discussed here is genocide.
Do 8/10 of the people who posted above care? No, they are not being murdered. But worldwide 250,000 a year genocide is going on, and in most of those countries it is done on behalf of the government or funded by it. Billions have died, more than the previous 2k years combined. And yeah the target are Christians who have committed no crime and have not inconvenienced any person in America in any way--so the politically correct answer is not to care, they are only Christians.

yeah, i know the cool thing now is to complain about religions, but it'll pass. i'm not some southern-style blind faith christian, but i believe it's a healthy lifestyle, and though the catholic church is nuts, i try not to say anything. i'm a lutheran, one of the more sensible denominations. the thing is, you aren't supposed to take the bible as complete fact. it WAS written by people a long time ago, and it's probably a lot of metaphors. but it teaches good life lessons, tells you to give a good outlook on people and try to help them. evangelism isn't wrong, because if you do it nicely and people still say no, then you don't need to bother them. people can believe whatever they want, but once it gets violent, action should be taken. christians aren't supposed to be violent nowadays. the new testament teaches love and compassion unlike the old testament, or tora, in which god is vengeful and violent. the qur'an unfortunately teaches violent evangelism, and that's why they need to be dealt with. that doesn't work anymore. killing for not joining a religion is not acceptable anymore, and never really was.
you need to stop being so stubborn, and admit that, at least, protestant christianity is not harmful to this world,

Islam doesn't promote violence like you said. That to me is an ignorant insult on your part, but I do agree with some stuff you said. The bible is suppose to be based on (if you are a Christian) on how Christ lived that is why Christians are called Christians. That is why we have the new testament; the new testament and the gospels are supposed to support our ideology of love. Humans have a dark side to them, and so they twist the word to blast the world. You see it everyday and you see it in history. A skeptical Christian should ask him or herself, am I here to walk like Jesus walked? If the answer is yes then you should read about Jesus love and compassion.

FACT: 500,000 Christians in Iran alone were executed for not converting to islam. They committed no other crime.
But yeah you are right.
And yeah with that thought genocide of 250,000/yr that has totaled billions is not a big deal since your family isn't being slaughtered right?
Oh and one other comment, the fact that the Pope spoke about this, doesn't diminish the fact. Christians mostly not catholic are slaughtered annually.

Hi.
What the Vatican and others are concerned about is:
The genocide world wide, more than 250,000 Christians a year, however this issue is much different from what you are suffering from when Christians say they feel sorry for you. These people do not flaunt their faith. Most do not own bibles (that is punishable by death, however it is a most cherished item). Many house churches share one Bible. In many countries with "religious freedom" it is not against the law to kill a Christian. It is not murder. Often governments arm the militias that do this.
This is happening in many countries world wide.
Why isn't it on the news? It just was, and it is politically correct to have religious toleration for all religions except Christianity here in America. Seeds were planted, America "evolved".
The media is a business. They won't publish much that won't sell. Here most don't care about what is outside our boarders.
Why do I bother to say anything, I'm not a religious fanatic, but genocide on this scale makes me cry. Aids in Africa and Wars do the same, however America knows about those.
Attitudes here reflect that Americans in general haven't been sensitive to the Genocide world wide.
It looks like people just care about stuff they find irritating about other people.

Do you applaud what Hitler did? Probably not. Who in their right mind would?
Billions have been killed via execution, genocide, etc. At about 250,000 per year, because they are of a certain religion. It happens to be Christianity.
But I guess it's not politically correct to care about such things, and most Americans don't give a damn unless it happens to affect them personally.

Sorry, I'm convinced the dogmatic religions of past ESPECIALLY christianity, are outdated. I don't hate the people that have faith, I just think they're misguided. The institutions are corrupt, and the ideology is dangerous. Religion needs to be superceded by science. Spirituality is still necessary, but not blind faith. That's just what I think.

But who cares if it doesn't affect you right?

I don't hate Christians, nor do I hate people of other faiths. I just can't stand when a crazy Christian comes up to me and says "Jesus told me to tell you that he loves you" or "People die because they don't believe in Jesus hard enough". I can respect someone for being devoted to their faith, but when they try to push their superior attitudes onto me it really makes me angry. I get into arguments with my mom all the time because I no longer share the same beliefs as her, I never did, going to church was her choice for me when I was younger. She wasn't so religious until she got old. All I ever got from religion was them telling me who I should hate. Hate the misguided woman for getting an abortion, hate the misguided woman for wanting to work, and hate the misguided woman for not being submissive to her husband also, hate the gays. Everyone should believe whatever they want to but no one, no matter what religion they are, should ever try to force someone else to live according to the faith of someone else.

Wow thanks for saying it like that. I'm always glad to see people share my views on religion. All it does is show you who you should hate or pity for not believing like you and subdue you to believe out of fear. If people were good for the sake of good, and not to guarantee their free ticket to this "heaven" they speak of, the world would be a much better place. I honestly don't give a shit i there is a god or not. I don't give a shit if I end up going to "hell." As long as the future generations have something to live for because of my actions, I don't care what becomes of me when I die. That would be selfish.

It may not say anything about killing each other, as you say, the opposite - but it doesn't stop what follows, the religious wars and disputes that cause death, famine, destruction, that sort of stuff.
But yes, it does introduce togetherness and some kind of humane 'law' or set of guidelines, but who knows who's right? - 3 years ago

There's no picture of him on my wall (smiles). Nothing wrong with people that do either. But dude, the guy speaks like 12 languages. So he gets something in English wrong that is probably due to our odd grammar (study a variety of languages and you will see American English is vastly different in structure... It it likely that he even gave this address in another language all together. Not all languages can translate into english and make sense.) But so either a translator or the pope made a grammatical error in a foreign language, he's stupid and should be trashed?
Would this be better received by a Protestant or Politically correct speaker?
