Oprah Magazine: Female Teachers Who Have Sex with Students Are Misguided Poor Souls Looking for Love...
August 27th, 2008 by Glenn Sacks
"Sex with students is bad, but why should it be the case that for women it's a case of 'poor boundaries' and for men it's hardcore brutal predation of the most evil sort?"

    • I had gotten information that Oprah was looking for people who were abused by an adult woman as a child. I posted this in Shattered Men and one person posted this link in regard to it. As a result of seeing this article, I am going to rescind my post for this and I will contact Oprah and tell her that as the director of Shattered Men, I have talked to many men and women who have been abused by women and many have told me they do not trust the media so they would not contact her regarding this. Most of them were ridiculed when they reported the abuse and many adult men who have been abused by women were ridiculed when they reported it to the police. This happened to one man who reported that his ex wife and a few of her girlfriends actually raped him. They would do nothing about it.

Is it any wonder that many do not see any equality in our justice system?

    • I absolutely agree with a previous poster “For the most part, people see women as less violent, more sensitive; truthfully, though, they know exactly what they're doing when they do something wrong. We can't excuse a person of a wrong-doing because she's a woman…”

I would like to add that women can also be vindictive and play victim to gain from the situation and get the excuse for wrong-doing. How many times we heard the story of a woman killing her husband and in her defense claiming she was a victim of abuse? Who can speak up for the dead husband and his side of the story? What about the women physically abusing or killing their children and claiming they are the victims… Why should a woman be excused for her abusive actions or the false allegations. Not only women but many men are also victims of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.

    • I think the debate should be on what sexual abuse means.
I have heard many stories about teacher-student affairs , and, although teachers should be more responsible about engaging in this kind of behavior there is a big gap between developing a relationship with a student and forcing one to engage in sexual relationship against his will.
I also think this applies to adult-minor relationships.
The harshness of american laws leaves room for abuse, coming from the ones who bring the accusations.
As long as teenage boys and girls have sex, just because they are doing it with an adult does not always mean they do not know, or do not have the power of judgement to realize what they are doing.
I am not saying that I agree with Oprah, or with the cause that she stands for, because that is obviously an act of feminism that was taken to the extreme.
But, generally speaking, I strongly believe that this issue should receive more attention, tolerance, and should be analyzed fairly and objective.
What I am saying is that a person ending a relationship with you, or cheating on you is not a pertinent reason to send him/her to jail.
I have met a lot of people that have been abused by accusations of statutory rape, or physical abuse on such reasons, as well as I have met underage people that had sexual relationships with teachers or adult partners, that were completely aware of their actions and did not feel abused and that were not, by any means, abused.

    • i dont like operah any way, she can eat a dirty sock. She's so one sided, and i think she's a lesbian and that is why she is so one sided to women and won't marry steadman. but that's just me, it is sick that these old women get this kind of attention, i tell you what, let an old hag touch my kid and see if she has fingers left to touch anything. Women are no better than men, and shouldnt be treated like such just because they look sweet and try to make a nice plea. These women are sick and need to be institutionalized.

    • This article should not be read as fact. Come on, Oprah's magazine is not a source for the understanding of the mindset of female pedophiles. If you want the facts read an academic journal with actual experts. This is just a ploy to sell magazines. Isn't Oprah the face of her magazine for every issue, how shallow can that be?

    • Just because she has a TV show doesn't mean what she says is smart, or right.

It's politics. She's playing into the hands of the women that support her book club I guess...

    • My husband and I have been wondering for years why these women are not branded as pedophiles. Normally, rape is an act of violence, but it is always about power and control. These women have had power and control of these children, so having sex with them is rape, but making them believe they want it makes their crimes even more heinous.
I had a Phys Ed teacher in high school who loved taking pictures of her students while they were in the shower after class.(Your grades were sure to be the best if you went to her home and got special coaching - all us girls knew that.) One of these students snatched the camera from her hands and ran to the principal's office with it. The student was reprimanded for stealing the camera, nothing was done to our teacher. So, even back in the 70's, female teachers were "incapable" of being pedophiles or rapists.
What sickens me is that Oprah, while she may not have written this, appears to have more sympathy with the predators than the victims.

I sincerely hope she condemns this article or does something to distance herself from it! Taking a page from her favorite politician's book, maybe she'll throw the author under the bus!!

    • Just a note, I'm really sick of the misuse of the word "pedophile." These women had sex with teenage students, not prepubescent ones. Pedophilia is a "sexual interest is toward pre-pubescent youths only and does not include teenagers."

Now that we've cleared that up, please carry on.

    • I can't believe there are people out there who want us to believe that female teachers who seduce their students are just lost souls looking for love. This is total hogwash, if you are a teacher you are intrusted by the parents and the schools to be a supervisor, not a friend of the children in your class. If you cross the boundary between teacher student relations you are a pedophile regardless of gender!

    • Oprah is on crack and she's feeding it to her public. Anyone who listens to her, especially in this situation, they are pretty much ignorant and naive. Men aren't the only ones who commit crimes such like these.

Very, very, stupid of Oprah to say and support.

    • "But most of these women come from conflict-ridden families where they didn't learn healthy social skills. Many learned to get their emotional needs—for love, attention, approval—met through sexual behavior." Once they start teaching, if faced with some kind of serious stressor (marital problems, for example) in addition to the right child sitting in their class, it's not a far leap to sex offender.

An impending divorce helped push 27-year-old Pamela Rogers into getting intimate with her 13-year-old student in 2004, says Joan Schleicher, a Nashville forensic psychologist who testified in court on her behalf. "She was demoralized and feeling empty inside, and he was the one to whom she could turn her attention." As the relationship progressed, Rogers (a former homecoming queen now serving an eight-year sentence) began, as many of these women do, to live in a world of "magical thinking," Schleicher says. "And she responded to that instead of the rules of society."

None of the experts condone the teachers' actions, but they do have sympathy. "I don't think she's a sexual predator," Schleicher says of Rogers. "I see her as a really hurting adult who needs help. I just hope she can get it."

    • For the most part, people see women as less violent, more sensitive; truthfully, though, they know exactly what they're doing when they do something wrong. We can't excuse a person of a wrong-doing because she's a woman, or because she's pretty, or whatever the case may be. All circumstances are different of course. For instance, student teachers can be just a few years older than high school seniors, but all the same, it's a boundary that shouldn't be crossed. It breaks through a line between teachers and students, and almost always, rumors spread like wildfire. My point is this; some cases may hold more wrong-doing than others, but in the end a crime was still committed. Whether the student made the first move or not, it's the teacher's duty as an educator and an adult to refuse. Whether that educator is male or female, romantic relationships with students are still wrong, and I highly doubt that they are about "lost souls looking for love."

    • Well, I think the key is if it was rape or not. Boys are almost always ready for sex and who wouldn't want to get with teacher? On the other hand, girls seldom think of sex or want it from an older man (I'm talking 13 and under).

Notes on a Scandal comes to mind. See it if you haven't already.

Yes, I'm aware boys are still able to be raped, but most of the time they want sex.

    • First, I have no sympathy for evil people who treat other human beings with such disrespect and abuse their position of power. Woman or man, pedophilia is wrong. Sleeping with your underage student is wrong. Full Stop.
Second, I'm quite shocked that Oprah Magazine would publish a story that seems to have sympathy for this kind of behaviour. Sure Oprah didn't write it, but it's got her big O brand all over it.

    • Lets be honest, I highly doubt Oprah wrote the specific article.

As to the discrepancy it is ridiculous to think that the situation is different. Teachers are in a position of authority and teenagers are impressionable it is a heady mix.

    • It's different, there is a legitimate double standard for this particular issue.

I had an affair with a 39 year old women when I was 16 and I can't blame her at all. I knew what I was getting into and was just as much responsible.

On the other hand when older guys seduce young girls it turns into lies and brainwashing. It's all about manipulation and some dude trying to live out his perverted fantasies.

It's a mutual thing when it is an older woman and younger man but is just selfish and disgusting when the older guy does it to a younger girl.

    • HolyCity2012:

Once again, you're making certain assumptions. You're assuming a 16 year old male has more self-awareness and sexual drive than a 16 year old female. You're assuming a female in a position of age/authority is less manipulative and dangerous than a male of the same age. Ask any married man and they might be happy to correct your assumption on that. :)

So you are enabling women to abuse minors right? it is this mindset that helps women get away with crimes that would send men to prison for 20 years.

The adult is responsible to control the situation and set limits even if a teenage boy does "come on to her" I have heard of several cases where adult women tried to claim the minor boy raped her when she made all the advances simply because she was caught. A teacher is in a position of authority and therefore she should face a harsher penalty for these things.

As to your having a "Y" chromosome, this does not prevent you from being a misandrist.

I use to be one myself until something happened that caused me to start Shattered Men.

I have a strong feeling you could benefit from Shattered Men too.

    • I cannot believe Oprah would actually defend such behaviour, but I have not read the article. In any case, it should not make a difference to our judgement whether people who sexually abuse children and teenagers are male or female - or whether they are attractive or not!!!

    • I consider myself quite lucky with the teachers I had at school. Without exepcetion the few female teachers all had faces like a frogs backside and I no inclination to fancy them.

However if the woman is guilty of soliciting sex with her students she is no more than a prostitue and should receive the same punishment as the male psyhco regardless of the fact whether she is pretty or attractive to the young male students. Likewise if she is of lesbian orientation and ensnares the young female student

    • as a teacher, it is part of your *job* to create a boundary between yourself and the students... hurting inside is not reason enough to put a child into that kind of situation, let alone another consenting adult. looking for love? even depressed, the majority of women know the rules of who, when and where. it is insulting to women.
