What a shoddy piece of journalism. The title of the NY Times article is completely out of context with actual article itself.
There's actually only one rumor in the who piece and that is that Jews didn't go to work that day and even that ridiculous statement is based on 100% verfiable fact.
The Israeli owned instant messaging company Odigo did in fact warn two of it's employees not to go to the twin towers that day. It is not known if they were Jews or not though.

Outside perspective is indeed a powerful position to have. Perhaps there's more truth than fiction in some of these 'rumours'. But Americans can't see passed their own mediated borders. Consider this statement again, but this time, don't think of it in terms of people in Cairo: "The rumors that spread shortly after 9/11 have been passed on so often that people no longer know where or when they first heard them. At this point, they have heard them so often, even on television, that they think they must be true."
