Come Home Soon: The Hardest Job in the Navy

picture_this
Juliet Soukup is a 21-year-old Navy Wife, her husband Michael left for Iraq in March. He was deployed a month after they were married in February and, with no family near by, Juliet has been here alone since then. She finds ways to fill her time, mostly spending her days with the other wives. Most of the women in this story are no more than twenty and many are pregnant or already have children. They are the ones who are left behind when the person they love goes to war, to take care of the children, the house, the bills, and live alone as if they were single parents for months at a time. Michael came home two weeks ago, he and Juliet are currently trying for a baby.

This is their story...

    • Really nice piece. The stills were really well done in that they captured the real world interaction and feel of these young navy wifes and mothers.

The choice of photos of the mothers and their babies was done very sensitively and added to the connectedness of the piece drawing in the viewer. By spending the amount of time with the groups shots of the mothers and children it setup the build for the reunion scenes.

The shots of Juliet waiting for and then reunited with Michael are great. The amount of photos at the end of them sitting around talking and teasing each other is good as it shows that lives need to reconnect after returning from Iraq.

The sound worked very well with the line of the piece. The combination of live ambient conversations and the music worked really well. I also appreciated the inclusion of the audio of the phone calls.

I think that Current should pick this up.

    • Really well done! The photos work so well together and the way they are laid out that it didn't feel like a slideshow, It wasn't until about a minute into the video that I realized it was only stills and no video.

Great work, this is superb multimedia project.
