Wake Up Black People. Obama is Not Your Savior
source: http://www.kingofallwhiteboys.com/content/post/67-wake-up-black-people-obama-is-not-your-savior
What??? I understand the joy in the black community that comes with the election of Barack Obama. I don't want to take anything away from them when it comes to this joyous victory; however, after Obama just gave a significant speech talking about hard roads, sacrifice, overcoming hardship and rebuliding America hand-in-hand, doesn't it seem a little naive - no, ignorant - to suddenly stand there with your hand out?
Now this person's comment is not indicative of the entire black race, but it's premise does deserve some analysis..."

I don't think life is going to get easier for many just because Obama was elected. More importantly, I also don't think people should expect life to get easier because of his election (or anybody's election for that matter). It's still going to require hard work on our part - not just the Presidents'.
And you're right, had McCain been elected, there would be a lot of rich white people looking for handouts themselves - which is also wrong. Unfortunately, it's a reality of partisan politics.

szul, I agree, Africa America does not need "saving".
I take you point that maybe some people life is going to get easier, but you would have the same thing from the rich fat cats had McCain suceeded...
Obama I think made it pretty clear that we have to come together, that all colours and creeds will be equal and that he will be president to those who disagree with him and voted against him also.
Fair enough we appear to agree

I didn't misunderstand the comment. I understood the context in which it was spoken.
However, if you read the entire essay it does say that this comment is not indicative of the entire black population.
The point of the article was that Obama has already given the black race the greatest thing they could ever ask for.

Funny how so many white commentators use the phase "Saviour"
Obama is not a saviour, no president is, black people are not waiting for a saviour, he in his achievement has proved this.I personally think this use of "Saviour" is borderline racist. It wasn't a term used for Clinton, who had similar policies, or as far as my researches go any other candidate.

WhichWayIsUp:
Savior simply means "a person who saves."
I agree with you completely. Calling Obama a savior is racist in my mind, because it implies that the black race needs "saving" - which it doesn't. This goes along with the line of the Cornel West comment that I made in the article.
The black race doesn't need saving, nor does it need any president to do anything for them. They are empowered enough to succeed themselves and overcome racism.

I think you may have miss understood that comment, down my way that comment means he is going to be an example, a figurehead for ambition, his achievement is also an achievement for the whole black american population.
"not by the colour of his skin, but by the content of his character"
In his achievement he has "done for us all".So perhaps your image of the black population with its hand out is more in need of analysis?
Stereotype, I think so. - 3 years ago
