Prop 8 Opponents March Outside Mormon Temple in Westwood

injektilokid
LOS ANGELES -- Hundreds of supporters of same-sex marriage rallied outside a Mormon temple in West Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon to protest what organizers called hefty financial contributions by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the campaign supporting a measure that bans same-sex unions in California.

Due to the Mormon Church's financial investment in the political proposition, an even stronger protest to revoke the church's 501 non-profit tax status is being waged online at: http://www.mormonsstoleourrights.com/

    • Dear rooted5,

Kudos to your grandfather for contributing to a house of faith.

Unfortunately, that house of faith has been a symbol of oppression and discrimination for those who don't fit into your ideologies. Remember, Blacks couldn't enter Mormon temples until 1978.

It is amazing that the Mormon church argues that it was its members, not the church itself, that basically bought the campaign. What is a church without its members?

Leaders of the LDS Church have exemplified a certain level of cowardice, ignorance, and arrogance by hiding behind their members and non-profit tax status in order to promote discrimination.

p.s. When do I get to vote on your marriage?

    • rooted5: did you go on a mission to bigotville?
Im sorry if you are choosing to ignore the fact that the LDS church does discriminate and hate. The truth is, the church funded the yes on 8 campaign with a large sum, about 40% of total contributions came from LDS. The truth is that those "prophets" you speak of are ALL white men. It wasnt until 1978 that people of color were allowed priesthood. Dont get me started of the role of women and their objectification.

I understand your need to defend your bigoted political organization but to call them "innocent" is just bullshit!

    • first of all, the LDS church DID not fund or donate the money. Tax paying members of the church, who are also citizens of the United States, donated from their own pockets just as ellen degenres dontated her money . So the arguement should not apply to the LDS church nor its tax-exempts. second, the church did not take away any rights! proposition 8 was placed on the California ballot, where californians voted..TWICE..to *restore* traditional marriage between a man and a woman. oh, and the LDS church was not the only church or religion who endorsed a yes on 8 vote. California residents have spoken, now the opponents are upset?? i don't see mccain and palin outside of the white house demanding a change of votes. the people have clearly made a choice.

..*sidebar* the temple is a sacred place, where one goes to feel peace. my grandfather contributed in the building of the Los Angeles temple, on the walls and on the entrance of the temple reads * House of the Lord *. * Holiness to the Lord *..the temple and the grounds which surround the temple, were dedicated by a prophet of God. The Spirit that one feels once within the gates is indescribable. I invite each of you who read this post, to go to your nearest LDS temple, and walk around..it truly is a lovely place. one quite opposite of the scene which sign carrying protestors created.

to ninepounds6, sorry but your information about the church is backwards. before you even attempt to share what you believe as truth, you should search the truth. and the truth is, we do believe in God, we believe that He talks to prophets today, just as He did in Moses' time. the golden tablet you speak of? we believe to be what is now known as The Book of Mormon, which was written on by ancient prophets. We read it along side the Bible, they go hand in hand and compliment eachother. The Book of Mormon stands as Another Testament of Jesus Christ.
Was not this country founded upon faith in God?

I think the ones "telling others that THEIR way of life is wrong", are the ones outside with THEIR signs! the LDS church does not "hate" or "discriminate" against any one person, prop 8 is a moral issue which *protects the traditional marriage between one man and one woman*..same-sex couples still have the same benefits, as any other civil union. This was never about a man can't love a man, or a woman can't love another woman..love who you want to love..but keep "marriage" between a man and a woman! *YES ON 8!!* go to lds.org, if you find one item of hate towards any group, let me know! until then, stop blaming the innocent..

    • What the heck gives a church the right to take away the rights of others?

I mean, seriously... this is coming from a group of people that honestly believes that god spoke to them from a beaver felt hat, and that their laws were written onto a golden tablet by god, who then floated them from earth up to heaven. Shall I go on? These are backwards, ignorant thinking people, telling others that THEIR way of life is wrong.

Churches and religions need to shut up and keep their ignorant teaching in their churches where it belongs. Separation of church and state, one of the more briliant ideas of our forefathers, and a cornerstone of the Constitution for a good reason!

Do we want these people influincing the policy-making machinery of an entire nation? Good for these people, protesting them outright and drawing attention to their hate mongering!
