Italians blast Berlusconi's joke on Obama

Image

Last week, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi joked about Barack Obama being "suntanned." ( http://tinyurl.com/5v2f9l ) The unfortunate remark caused an international diplomatic scandal. Italy's left-wing parties accused the Prime Minister of damaging the image of the country in the world; French First Lady Carla Bruni said she was happy to have given up her Italian citizenship; the NYT Politics Blog was inundated by 1500 comments - and counting - from Italians embarrassed over the quip ( http://tinyurl.com/5an5ny ).

NotSpeakingInMyName.com is a "spontaneous gathering of Italians that feel embarassement and indignation." Users can upload a picture of themselves holding a sign which reads "I'm Italian and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is not speaking in my name."

In times of Internet privacy concerns, it is refreshing to see that people are willing to show their faces and give out name and surname to express their opinion.

    • I think you have to take into consideration how Italy is perceived by people in more recent news. In Italy, especially corresponding to football (soccer), there have been off color remarks by Italians to people like Zenedine Zidane and also the fascists come out in droves to some football matches. It is good to see that this kind of contempt is bothering to Italians.

    • Well it's just a hummor, i don't see nothing out of the order. Americans can call other countries - third world, but the world is just one as far as i know, and Obama is actualy looking like having too much time on beach, so let's start saying things like they are and not feel bad about it.
