JERUSALEM (AFP) – Israel's interim Prime Minister Ehud Olmert on Monday announced the release of 250 Palestinian prisoners as a gesture of goodwill towards president Mahmud Abbas, officials said.

Olmert made the announcement during talks with Abbas in Jerusalem which are part of the US-backed peace talks launched nearly a year ago but that have made little visible progress.

"Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told Abbas of his decision to release 250 Palestinian prisoners belonging to the pragmatic camp as a gesture of goodwill towards Abbas," said a senior Israeli official.

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erakat said, "Abbas had asked him to free Palestinian prisoners and Olmert told him of the decision to release 250 at the beginning of December" ahead of the Muslim Feast of the Sacrifice.

The Israeli official said that none of the prisoners belonged to the radical Palestinian movements such as Hamas and Islamic Jihad. More than 11,000 Palestinians are held in Israeli prisons.

    • It's not like it all just "happened"... there is alot of history behind all of this, and I don't know if we in the west can truly understand either side. We get information here and there.
We put together pictures in our minds. But life here and life there are vastly different. If it weren't none of this would have even happened. They would have organized it all and decided what to do peacefully. Right?

Especially when only presented with one side continuously.

And I'm not saying that to upset you in the least... truly. Just thinking out loud. Personally I doubt either side is right OR wrong. I am sure they both have reasons for the things they do or don't do.

    • Thank you. And of course, there is never any black and white answer to long standing problems such as these. The public opinion goes one way and then another.

But to be fair, both sides need to have a voice.

    • Added note: Respect to you for clipping articles from both sides. There is much hurt in Israel and Palestine. It is sickening to see these so called activists that are completely biased and the part enemy.

    • Not a step towards Peace. Israel released prisoners back to Hizbullah this year. What did Israel get in return? Two young Soliders returned in coffins. And Lebanon did not let Israel know that the 2 men were dead for humiliation. Is Israel at Peace with Lebanon? No and the main prisoner that was released from Israel Samir Kuntar has vowed to continue fighting the Israeli's and liberate Jerusalem.

    • I don't think we here can judge who is right and wrong, as each is both right and wrong. We hear stories from people in the area, but we don't know all the details, what lead up to what happened.

But this is a step towards peace, let's see what Hamas does in return.
