eHarmony for everyone, including gays. Happy now?

eHarmony, founded on Christian principles and the idea that marriage is between a man and a woman, is now extending its services to gays after a gay man filed a discrimination law suit against the company.

I specifically posted this article because it seems to be unbiased.

Here's my question for you -- why is a private company being forced to compromise its values? Why is it okay in this case, whereas if one were to sue a vegetarian restaurant for not serving meat, we'd all laugh at how ridiculous an idea that is?

Any thoughts?

    • While I think websites shouldn't have to be scrutinized on their content - gay cruising sites shouldn't have to take straights, etc. - I think a site SHOULD be able to exclude based on a general focus. BUT that said, I think E-Harmony is SELLING people having life long, fulfilling relationships to people that haven't been able to find them. Excluding gay's from that outcome is really short sited.

    • I am glad he did this. eHarmony does not just exclude gays, they exclude lesbians, bisexuals, transsexuals, crossdressers, anyone into BDSM, against religion, and anyone that claims to be depressed, sad, angy, or anything they deem not "perfect". The internet is filled with such stories.

They are Nazis in their approach. Thousands have been kicked off for such trival things as not having jobs! There are also rumors that many minorites have been discriminated against, too.

And when you write them to ask why you were booted, the e-mails just bounce back

Cowards, and Nazis. I am glad someone sued them!

    • what is interesting to me is that it's okay to have a specialized gay matching site for gays only yet not have one for heterosexuals.

what is happening to freedom in this country? apparently businesses can be cornered by government into doing things that are against the business' values.

this is becoming a joke. eHarmony is not "going out of their way" to persecute a group of people, it was simply founded to match up straight men and women to create heterosexual relationships. the extensive, expensive research done that makes eHarmony as successful as it is was based on what made HETEROSEXUAL relationships work.

      why single out eHarmony?

this is getting to be ridiculous. people who are offended by this need to stop feeling victimized; they're creating it in their heads.

    • Yeah, I don't like this ruling. There are plenty of gay dating web sites, why can't there be a straight dating web site? This ruling could potentially put this site out of business by alienating it's straight users.

    • it may be a private company but it seems like theyre going out of their way to pick on a whole group of people...if you dont support being gay w/e thats your own opinion but youre gonna go out and start a website dedicated to love and helping people find but than youre going to use it to alienate gays? doesnt sound very moral to me.

for 1, the whole dress shop thing is a Completely different situation.
for 2, i get what youre saying about the courts deciding what services companies have to offer and all and i do think people should be able to run business how they want but what if they just didnt feel like offering their services to minorites or another group of people for w/e reason?
besides, i just think its in bad taste to start a website centered around something as wholesome as love and to exclude gays because of your own archaic beliefs.

i dont think you get it....im not saying the government should force them to include services for gays, but at the same time the gov shouldnt have to. maybe you dont agree with gays but that doesnt mean you shouldnt offer your services to them, how is that any different than running a whites only restaurant? come on people, its 2008, were seriously still treating certain groups of people like 2nd class citizens? isnt it about time to learn from our past instead of repeat it?
and i do believe its a fight for eqaulity even if all that about the founder is true. you make it out like the people in the activist group are the bad guys picking on the founder just because he happens to be in that group...theyre just doing what is right and just to them and trying to be treated the same as anyone else.
and as for all those specialized sites you mentioned, those sites were set up for the sole reason of setting up asian couples, or people over 40, eHarmony's main focus wasnt "heterosexuals only" its was a general match-making site that excluded gays. if he wanted to make it a christian site with christian heterosexual members only ok...but that wasnt the focus so theres no good reason the services shouldnt be offered to everyone...like i said before, the answer isnt the gov forcing them to do that...its just immoral and in bad taste to start a site for a good wholesome reason and to just not offer the services to gays.

yeah but its not like the entire site was centered around that fact...they very well could offer their services to gays w/o compromising all the ideals the site was based on...perhaps their own ideals but not what the sites ideals are. like i said before, if they wanted to make a site exclusively for people who share the same beliefs as they do ok, but that wasnt the original intention. the original intention was to "match people based on compatibility" which is not exclusive to straight people and therefore they have no reason to say certain people cant use the site.

      duh.
how many times did i say this...
"if he wanted to make it a christian site with christian heterosexual members only ok"
"if they wanted to make a site exclusively for people who share the same beliefs as they do ok"
im saying...and make sure you pay close attention here...if he wanted to make a site that reflects his own ideals ok, or one for heteros only, or a site for Christians or for w/e than he shouldve thought about that when he set the site up...thats not the case for eHarmony.
as people of the majority we have the responsibility to look out for people of minorities and their rights.
