Protest against the police shooting unarmed man turns violent in Oakland [UPDATE 1/10/09]

larkjl86
An Oakland protest over the fatal shooting of an unarmed man on a train platform by Bay Area Rapid Transit police turned violent Wednesday night, with fires set, cars vandalized, and windows smashed - just hours after the officer who fired the deadly shot resigned.

[Update 1/10/09]
This shouldn't have happened. It doesn't solve the problem and this is a BART policeman who did this not the Oakland Police nor the Oakland citizens who got their windows smashed and cars ruined by fire. Unnecessary. The day after the riot, the family and friends of Oscar Grant pleas the "protesters" to stop the violence during a news conference.

California Attorney General Jerry Brown on Saturday dispatched a state prosecutor to monitor Alameda County's investigation into the New Year's Day slaying of the unarmed man by a transit police officer that was recorded on videotape.

Here is the link of the updates including Jerry Brown talking about the investigation and how the riot affected residents and business in Downtown Oakland:

    • Now how did I know with out even looking it was a black man. Nobody ever protests white people getting shot. Well, unless they're gay.

    • Ok this is stupid...

I know someone was basically murdered by the police... but do you really think that by smashing the windows of local businesses and lighting innocent peoples cars on fire you are going to gain support?

A peaceful protest that stays peaceful garners much more support compared to a bunch of morons running around breaking shit...

Tell you what... if that was my car or my business window I would have shot your sorry asses...

Yes the cops were in the wrong... but what these people did was almost as bad. I was behind them until this shit...

For one... we don't know how innocent the guy was. The question was not his innocence but whether he was armed and or resisting, etc to deserve to be shot. Which he was not...

I said almost as bad... did I say just as bad or equally bad or twice as bad... NO... I said almost... as in not as bad... as in close to...

In my eyes the destruction these people caused is nearly as bad... many people were probably injured, a bunch of people were arrested and countless tax dollars were thrown away to try and contain and clean up these peoples messes. Not to mention all of the property damage, etc.

At least the cops had the decency to shoot only one guy and not make a big mess while doing it.

I'm not trying to trivialize the guys death.. which is a travesty. But come on now... this is not the proper response.

    • Riots!! Huh! That should teach those cops a lesson. Next time they think about shooting an innocent person they'll say
"nah I better not, remember that riot last time". (lmao)

    • From what I saw from the footage, and of course that doesn't compare to actual eyewitness testimony, it appears that the violence that people are complaining about only came AFTER the police made their presence known.

You have a large but - at that point - peaceful protest about a police murder and a squad car shows up in the middle of it? That's like having Rush Limbaugh show up in the middle of a NOW rally. That's either a clear intimidation tactic or the actions of a bunch of dumbasses with badges (or both).

And you'll notice that the destruction of property - the car fires and the window-smashing - doesn't take place until AFTER the police order the crowd to disperse from the original protest.

So I'm just wondering... what would have happened if the police simply let the protesters have their peaceful protest? No intimidation tactics, no show of force, no "you will disperse in thirty minutes or we will send in our jackbooted goons". It's in the middle of the night, it's not interfering with normal business operations... what would have happened if the protesters simply... protested?

      Something to think about.

    • People are upset, and they should be. Acts such as this are reprehensible. I know, I realize it was Black Americans and the sad truth is that we have accepted such acts of violence against minorities in America, but I'm glad people are getting pissed about this continuing cycle of police brutality against people of color in our country. I hope no one is seriously injured, but I'm glad people are no laying down about on the left coast.

What should be the punishment for shooting someone who was already detained in cuffs?

    • Apart of me understands this. I am completely against violence but there is a breaking point. Malcolm X said:

"I think there are plenty of good people in America, but there are also plenty of bad people in America and the bad ones are the ones who seem to have all the power and be in these positions to block things that you and I need. Because this is the situation, you and I have to preserve the right to do what is necessary to bring an end to that situation, and it doesn't mean that I advocate violence, but at the same time I am not against using violence in self-defense. I don't even call it violence when it's self-defense, I call it intelligence."

      It's time to defend ourselves.

Sooner or later the authorities have to answer to Improper training, improper actions, improper use of credentials, improper use of a firearm.
      The public has had enough!
the police are there to serve & protect. Nowadays the police think they are the rulers of society.
The personal views of a police officer should never interfere with their work.
      They're just a bunch of "big-headed" Megalomaniacs!
The Bad cops give all the good cops a bad name.

one reason is that the mainstream media isnt really picking up on this, if the guy was white or the son of an actor, then there would be much more national coverage.

typically, people who suffer these kinds of abuses arent beautiful white girls or related to celebrities which apparently requisites in covering murders for CNN, faux, and MSNBC.

And I haven't even hear a public apology nor from the man that pull the trigger or the Police Department.

    • I don't condone violence but they should protest until this Policeman is inprisoned for life. Police are becomming more and more like gestapo and need to be reigned in by the Federal Government if necessary. Maybe we should take thier guns away until they can trained how to use a weapon and act responsible. Police must be held accountable in all cases. Thank God for Video Cameras all over the place. It is a double edeged sword that cuts both ways. Killing of defenseless people is punishable by life in prison. Holding a person dwon and shooting him in the back, this is the most cowardly and brutal and sickening act todate and goes to new levels of brutality that most convicted killers would not even think of comitting. Prison for life is the only answer.

Way to exploit an excuse to be angry, Oakland... Great job fighting the police state, really works when you give them a great excuse to kick your ass. I have to say I hope these morons get their dues.

What, I don't know that senseless violence makes matters worse?

What will attacking police really do in this situation?

The time to act had already passed. The death is done, why riot afterward? It doesn't prove anything, it doesn't DO anything, it won't change anything except cause more conflict and damage.

This is the same deal with Greece. Continual senseless rioting does absolutely nothing to help the ignorance and misuse of power that caused the problem.

Please point out my errs but just telling me to go read a book is no means of discussion.

    • REPOSTING :

Many will think I am crazy, but I think what is happening in Greece will be America's future. Americans are losing their homes in great numbers, jobs are scarce and unemployment is getting higher each month. All of this and the cost of Gas is down yet the prices that were increased during the high Gas prices are still in place. College students are finding it harder and harder to cover their costs to complete their education and the future for those that are able to complete their educations looks bleak.
The Bailout has sold our children and our children's children into virtual tax slavery. Further the monies that are being interjected into America's economy only strengthens the non-caring elite, that in fact have done their all to bring us to this very situation. Corporate America has outsourced us to the point where America is no longer a viable producer in the world market. What jobs are available are mostly in the service sector which basically is making hamburgers or cleaning the elite's toilets and even jobs in the public sector are decreasing as the economy continues to slow.

The rioting in Greece began Dec 6 2008 yet it is still ongoing and if you research the reason that it continues to this day you'll find that the Greeks are in much the same boat as America. Fear not though “Posse Comitatus “ will be in place by the time Americans get really reactive and FEMA has been handed over to Homeland Security now and they have so called “warehouses” in waiting should there be a need to house large numbers of detainees.

    • A peaceful protest that escalates into physical form directed at the accused I can understand. But destroying your neighborhood? an excuse to engage in violence. Most of those cops leave there job and drive the same highways into the same neighborhood onto the same street as most of the protestors. Cops similar like us are ass high in debt with lifestyle they can't afford with kids that probably hate them. Now before everyone starts the cyber beat down on me. That cop should be charged with manslaughter. Your badge does not put you over me.
But shit people. There is rioting in the streets because a human was killed in Greece and Cali? But we idle forward and allow a $700Billion Bailout to pass, massive lay-offs, foreclosures the Patriot Act?

A human being shot dead by a cop I guess take less personal effort to understand.

Agreed. There are too many people supporting violence. Destroying your neighborhood is the stupidest idea. And it doesn't get anyone to really listen to you.

Now, if the protest remained peaceful, that would be very powerful, but no, it turned violent, and pointless.

Jumping up and down on a car, or using a trash can to bash in a McDonald's window is not my first reaction to police brutality. How on earth is that justified? It's a childish act that perpetuates only more problems.

Protest to have your voice heard. Become involved in your local government and start changing things for the better! Acting like a brat because you like to smash things doesn't solve a damn thing!

If you are saying 'Jews' for 'news' meaning the jew-run media, then you are improperly blaming a race in place of capitalism. You should be blaming corporations for inadequacies of the mass media. One could argue that the purpose of the mass media is to control opinions with the main goal of creating consumer cash cows out of us all, and to keep corporate tools in power in the government. You see, it's money and power, not race, that is the problem.

Also, I'm not assuming anything, but you sound racist, very unenlightened. It is primitive to be so. Ignorance is dangerous. Racists are slaves to their fear and primitive group mentality that possibly served us when we were cavemen, but no longer.

Youre part of the problem. Do you honestly think that if that were done it would solve anything? He should be charged with murder and put in prison. Killing him would serve NO purpose, it would only fuel the already escalated fires.

We have laws and courtrooms for a reason. This officer broke the law and should be disciplined accordingly.

Protests like this one will only perpetuate the problem, not fix it. It will only give the police MORE reason to think they can use deadly force given the violence of the people.

The problem with peaceful protests is that even if everyone in that protest behaves, the police will come up with a way to make it a violent protest if they don't want it to happen..

Do a search of the videos here on Current and you'll find one from a few years ago done by a recent immigrant that was asked to film a small peaceful protest in New York's Central Park. He caught the police provoking the protesters to turn this small peaceful protested into a violent one, and thus gave them the excuse to arrest everyone involved.

You are dealing with the government, and the government does not play fair. In fact the government plays downright dirty thanks to our polarized "with us or against us" mentalities of late. Just ask the protesters at both the Republican and Democratic Conventions.
