Oscar Grant Protest Part 1-8

On a day that saw both the funeral of Oscar Grant in Hayward and the sudden resignation of Mehserle from BART 's police force, a peaceful daytime protest at Fruitvale station evolved into violence as night fell. Police in riot gear fired tear gas into the crowd, sparking a violent reaction from an already agitated crowd. Police made score of arrests as the night wore on with dramatic footage airing on local news stations.

Above is footage taken on Broadway Ave. in downtown Oakland, before the violence broke out. Protester Ebony Nicole Brown, 20, self-identified as a friend of the deceased's sister explains her reasons for taking to the streets last night.
